@tomrkobayashi It's got to be the Uncharted games. What a masterclass in environment art, and their technical art presentations are still relevant and useful today.

@HovlStudio @Naruvt0 I did check and saw your AI concepts. I apologize for assuming you used it more - I've been noticing a trend of people making good vfx, but then using AI to generate an impressive looking game scene around it for screenshots, which feels very disingenuous.
English

@HovlStudio @Naruvt0 You need to lay of the AI tools and practice your craft dude 😵💫

@Bp__Dev @Pavel_Oliva @Botan_cr Dude these issues will never be solved because they fundamentally cannot be. It's impossible to make an LLM not halucinate or protect from prompt injection, and the same limitations apply here.
You cannot make a game with consistent interactions and a persistent world this way.
English

@Pavel_Oliva @Botan_cr I am 100% certain these issues will be improved if not solved in coming years.
English

@Pavel_Oliva @Botan_cr That's because when it predicts a GTA stlye game, it doesn't just draw from the latest GTA 6 trailer, it pulls from GTA Vice city, Driver 2, some wierd rally game or Forza horizon... It's trained on the movement of games, but imaged photo-realistically. Huge disconnect.
English

@Botan_cr These videos are sus. It feels like a lot of stuff is being simulated, but every time the player bumps into an object in the scene, the object has the most basic rigidbody solver. Like here they bumped into a pile of trash and all of them flied away as single mesh.
English

@DashAttackVT It could fail because it doesn't make enough money back month over month to support the staff on the project, leading to less update content, and less players for those updates, etc.
This tends to be driven by game quality first, then outrage farming dumbasses blaming skins.
English

We are apparently getting new content in february and ranked matches will bring the competitive people to the table.
Like so long as they don’t bring out an extremely SJW coded character I don’t see why it should fail.

@LiamTart If they have budget for post-launch, then they just have to stick around long enough push through the games meme status. Concord sank 8 years of development costs desperate for a return... highguard hopefully not?

@CohhCarnage @Cromwelp Lots of people know about Concord! And Anthem! I don't think interest equates to sales. It's interesting because of the risk!Streamers will play it, and the games fate could be decided on 2nd hand experience.
English

@Cromwelp RIGHT? It's working wonders. Just not so sure it's been the best marketing? To be blunt, most messages I receive are "Do you actually think it'll be good?"
I mean, everyone KNOWS about it. That's good. But... I feel like there are better ways to pull this off. 😅

@ThatNgonGuy The cycle I go through is:
1. "I need to make an awesome portfolio peice to land a new job!"
2. Overscope on something new
3. Get a new job anyway based on professional work
4. No time for portfolio projects!

@armanguy @_Tom_Henderson_ Paragon assets where all made freely available by Epic after the games cancellation and are accessible from the unreal engine launcher as a useful way to test gameplay, animations, effects, with existing AAA quality assets made with the engine in mind.

Look, here's the thing about Verhoeven's Starship Troopers. I have no doubt that Verhoeven intended to make it somewhat satirical, jabbing at what he perceived to be fascist views.
He completely failed, and here's why. He didn't seem to deliver this message to the team. The acting, cinematography, and editing all combined to make a pretty cool movie about alien bugs menacing Earth. I am sure even Verhoeven got into the film's concepts, and only afterwards did he realize that his best chance to seem "cool" at Hollywood cocktail parties was to pretend it was supposed to be a satire. After all, he didn't want to seem a Philistine like Michael Bay.
Also the whole fascist thing seems pulled out of the blue. Why is his future Earth fascist? Its' military is completely volunteer. The world is in fact facing an existential threat - a foe which would Kill Every Human. You'd think some degree of militarization is in order.
I think Verhoeven somehow mixed up "military" with "fascist". Though both are authoritarian, they're emphatically not the same thing. r
I read Starship Troopers as a kid. When I went to see the movie, naturally I expected the powered armor of the book and saw it nowhere. Did I care? A little. But pretty early on I just decided that Starship Troopers the movie was a fun movie about fighting enemy bugs and had little or nothing to do with the book. So how I can enjoy the movie AND the book on totally different grounds. In the same way that I can enjoy reading Leiber's Fafhrd & the Gray Mouser and still watch the movie Conan. They're not the same.

@TylerAlterman It's called the CIA. Unbiased, wanting any edge they could find during the cold war. Well funded.
Ultimately discovered it's all bullshit, and the stuff that was not bullshit produced the Unabomber, new ways to torture people, and the popularisation of LSD.

There should be an independently funded hyper-rigorous woo research institute to test claims like:
Telepathy is real
Ghosts are real
Past lives are real
Faith & energy healing is real
Precognition is real
Prayer works
Chakras are real (ie cognition is distributed across the body)
Previous attempts seem dominated either by believer ideology or skeptic ideology. So this institute should be absolutely non-ideological: consisting of both believers and curious skeptics. The main thing that everyone should care about is The Truth
There should be extreme focus on epistemology for both camps:
• For the believers: Acknowledgement that woo stuff is especially likely to compromise the epistemology of experimenters, since many effects rely on belief
• For the skeptics: Multiple mode of inquiry should be supported. (Rant: the RCTs that scientists worship actually struggle to capture contextual effects. They also systematically struggle to analyze outlier experts, even through within-subject designs.)
It’s crazy to me that this doesn’t already exist. Clearly any one of these things being real would massively update our picture of reality. Many would have wide-reaching benefits to society. How did science become so ideological rather than empirical?
English

@nickseavert Although there are resources, I think it's important to meet people in the industry. To show that yes, this is a real path you can take!
These days, it might be helpful to temper their expectations too. Just because there's learning conten, doesn't mean its a straight shot.
English

Maybe i'm salty that there wasn't much information online about how to use tools at the time, and communities were a place where criticism was brutal. You just had to hop in and start trying to do stuff. I would argue there is probably an overabundance of information now on any subject you can think of. With this abundance of information, its easier than ever to get started.
English

One thing that sorta irritates me is when I meet someone new and tell them that I work more or less in the games industry. Their first response is usually "Wow, my kids would love to talk to you because they want to make games too".
My first thought besides the fact that almost every parent I meet has told me this, is that when I was 12, I wanted to make games too. So that's exactly what I did. I did it and did it and did it and did it. You kinda have to be self sufficient and self motivated to do this sort of work, so if I have to step in and tell someone to go watch brackeys on YT, is that helping them if they didn't find it on their own in the first place?
Should I be nice and push them in that direction or just tell their kid they need to sink or swim.
English

@sevenevg Ps2 polycount, ps1 textures, with bent normal lit particles is the perfect level of retro-as-you-remember-it, personally. Aesthetic is spot on, authenticity second. 👍
English

@rovensky @Kappische Not entirely true. How much of a satisfying combat mechanic is animation? In some games its pure locked in animation! But others its very explosive VFX doing the heavy lifting. A famous Wolfenstein patch made a gun more perceptibly "Powerful" when only the sound changed. Etc, etc
English

@Kappische A gameplay loop is a gameplay loop
For example if your game is focused on combat - your combat mechanic needs to be fun with unshaded cubes, or it won't be much better with full environment
Ask Ubisoft
English

This is one of the biggest lies in gamedev.
You need almost all the components of the game to properly understand how entertaining a game is. It’s extremely hard to evaluate a game just based on greyboxing
Gorka Games@GorkaGames
If your prototype isn’t fun without art, it won’t be fun with art. Art can enhance fun. It can’t create it Prototype with cubes, test the loop, iterate fast Polish is a multiplier: only when the base is good

@OskSta Interested to know what you find for rungs. I wanted to build something outdoors, in our old place before moving.
While in builders shops, I only found decorative dowels, or maybe 1" diameter broom handles. It just didn't feel robust enough for jumping on.
