2. Contributions This is where most people get confused. You’ll want to make a non-deductible contribution to your new or existing Traditional IRA. That just means you don’t get a tax break for it up front. But here’s the catch: If you already have money in a Traditional IRA that hasn’t been taxed (like from an old 401(k) rollover), the IRS looks at all your IRAs when you do the conversion. So instead of a clean, tax-free conversion, you could owe taxes on part of it. This is called the Pro-Rata Rule.
