What is Final Five Voting? It's a combination of two powerful election reforms: 1) A single open primary in which all voters participate regardless of their political party registration. 2) A Ranked Choice Voting general election among the top five top winners of the primary.

@BOENYC @NyWhitaker I would love to vote in this primary. Unfortunately independents are disenfranchised by the self serving 2 party system that is NOT a part of the US constitution. @FinalFiveNYC

This mailer arrived in my mailbox from NY’s Board of Elections on the same day that Joe Biden clinched the Dem nomination and there are no Republican challengers to the leading candidate. It begs the question: what is the cost to taxpayers and what is actual turnout to justify this spend? Expanding access to in-person voting, especially for hardworking New Yorkers with busy schedules, is a laudable goal, but such a long schedule really needs to be thought through. New York has incredibly low voter turnout and we are doing nothing about it. Moreover, anyone can get a mail in ballot easily if they are traveling or find it more convenient to vote by mail. But the more troubling issue with how New York’s Board of Elections runs our primaries is the fact we have misplaced priorities. We are spending what appears to be massive amounts of taxpayer money to make sure a tiny fraction of voters can vote, without addressing the core issue that New York is facing and which is threatening our democracy, and that is pathetically low voter turnout. We need to fix this. Because New York is one of the few states left with closed primaries, over 1.5 million independent voters are disenfranchised . No one should be forced to join a party just to vote in a primary . It also violates one of our core civil rights—freedom of association . We need to open our primaries and make sure every independent is franchised. Then let’s look at an early voting schedule that makes sense using data from turnout to craft a schedule that is not a flagrant waste of taxpayer money. With higher voter turnout we may even want to expand the hours and access! If we are really committed to saving our a democracy, supporting open primaries is essential. @SalAlbaneseNYC @OpenPrimaryUSA @DemocracyFound @FinalFiveNYC @OneCityRisingNY @JCAndersonNYC @nicolegelinas

Excellent book & interview of @NickTroiano on the importance of non partisan election reform. It echoes our message in NYC around @FinalFiveNYC

Yall the answer is slowly get electoral reform state by state. We can do this in 25 states simply by ballot measure. Nevada Question 3 is a HUGE national race to get behind this November if we want to effect change. We have a Final Five ballot question in NYC as well. @VoteYESon3NV @FinalFiveNYC

.@harrysiegel in his thoughtful column on problems @NYCMayor is facing also makes a compelling argument on how broken our electoral rules are & need for nonpartisan elections so vast # of voters who aren’t ideologues can participate. We are working on this. @FinalFiveNYC

NEWS from @CommonCause: “There are over 3.1 million registered voters in NY who are politically unaffiliated voters…24% of the electorate & roughly a third live in NYC.” Rising numbers of Independents is leading to more calls for nonpartisan elections. commoncause.org/new-york/resou…
