@paulg This is the #1 place that founders can improve - by believing what they're saying when they talk to investors, especially when it comes to your numbers.

So you're not claiming that you're guaranteed to succeed, only that you have a 3% chance of succeeding. And many of you, if you ask yourself, will find you already believe that. So when you present to investors, remember that you believe what you're saying. They can sense that.

Advice to YC founders presenting at Demo Day (and any similarly early stage startup): You don't have to prove that you'll become huge. If it were provable, you'd already have your future valuation. You just have to show that you're a sufficiently good bet to become huge.

@dunkhippo33 does it again - if you're thinking about investors as primarily providing $$, you need to think again. Love that she shares how she perceives her own value add. So important to have someone who can help you manage morale during a startup roller coaster!
Elizabeth Yin 💛@dunkhippo33

Some wed night thoughts on investor “value add”: 1) At the end of the day, money is a commodity. That mere fact should make every vc shudder. It is amazing how many ppl (incl myself) clamor to get into a commodity business!

Another stellar thread from @dunkhippo33 - I particularly like the bit about having more ppl not helping to find PM fit. Too many founders raise to hire for stuff they don't want to do, not for getting to/past PM fit.
Elizabeth Yin 💛@dunkhippo33

Saturday thoughts on funding: Where it helps. Where it doesn't. And how it affects team, success, and PM fit. This is just my $0.02 after looking reviewing 30k+ early stage startups personally and having led 350+ investments across 2 VC firms & as an angel. Let's begin! >>
