As Kenya advances towards a globally competitive and industrialized economy, access to decent, secure and affordable housing remains a critical pillar in improving urban livelihoods, supporting productivity and driving inclusive socio-economic growth. The Shauri Moyo Affordable Housing Project in Nairobi, located about six kilometres from the Central Business District, is part of the Government's flagship slum upgrading programme aimed at transforming informal settlements into dignified, modern living spaces. The estate is set to be renamed Johana Ng'eno Boma Yangu Estate in honour of the late Hon. Johana Ng'eno, the former Emurua Dikirr MP and Chairperson of the National Assembly Departmental Committee on Housing, Urban Planning and Public Works, following a directive issued by H.E. President @WilliamsRuto in March 2026. Shauri Moyo A comprises 1,848 housing units spread across 12 blocks of 14 floors each and is equipped with key social amenities including parking spaces, an Early Childhood Development (ECD) centre, retail shops, a social hall and open recreational areas designed to support community living. The larger Shauri Moyo B development, currently under construction, will deliver 4,566 mixed-use residential units targeting diverse socio-economic groups. The project incorporates modern facilities such as a kindergarten, clubhouse, shopping mall, hospital and swimming pool, creating a fully integrated urban settlement. The two projects are generating thousands of jobs for engineers, technicians, contractors, suppliers, artisans, transport operators and youth engaged across the construction value chain, demonstrating the transformative economic impact of the Affordable Housing Programme. The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration continues to play a key coordination role in supporting implementation through multi-agency collaboration, community engagement, administrative support and maintenance of a secure environment necessary for the smooth execution of the projects.
