I'm looking for a great online maths tutor to work with a group of able & ambitious UK state school kids over the coming year to help them qualify for JMO. Just 2 hours per week, £25/hr (it's a good cause). If interested, please send a short note & CV to contact@parallel.org.uk

@AddvanceMaths Looks nice and clear! There a few typos on the completing the square example that could confuse students.
Step 1 should be subtract 6 and give 14 not 26.
Step 2 should be subtract (5/2)^2 on LHS and just 14 on RHS.
Then in step 3 get rid of (5/2)^2 on LHS then it's correct 😀

@nastyoldmrpike Agree it could be worded better. Imagine if it were
write the missing even number to make this addition correct
13 + _2 = 25
English

Stop defending this, it is incorrect, the number required is 3, 3 is not a square number. Just accept they've made a mistake and move on. Also if a kid puts 9 and doesn't cross out the power then what?

@missradders @primaryteachajd For those who haven't seen the question. And the markscheme. Absolutely fine.
English

@rodrigotweets1 @mathsjem @Whitehughes They use un+1>un for increasing sequences so they should have also included f(x)>f(y) whenever x>y as the definition of functions and then mentioned the derivatives can be used as a check?
English

@rodrigotweets1 @mathsjem @Whitehughes I remember thinking the same. But then I saw a good thread on here sometime. It used the example x^3 which is always strictly increasing but f'(x)=0 at x=0. Also say the example cube root of x which is not even differentiable at x=0.
English

Question for A-level teachers! I've always taught that a function is "increasing" if f'(x) >=0 and "strictly increasing" if f'(x)>0, but I've now seen a few questions where they seem to use the latter to mean "increasing". What are your opinions on this? @mathsjem @Whitehughes

@Ridermeister a^n means what is a times itself n times. a^1/n is kinda like an opposite. What number times itself n times is a. Then definite a^-1 as reciprocal of a. Then all rest can be shown to work? No idea how to explain to GCSE students what a^x is when x is irrational...
English

@Ridermeister My maths teacher convinced the class by writing 2^3 = 8, 2^2=4 , 2^1=2 and then asked us what we thought 2^0 and 2^-1 would be.
Wonder if he has used base 4 we might also have been able to guess 4^0.5? Maybe we could explain a^1/n for integer n with the phrase..

@DHTDurrant @ITimbrell I'm not arguing by the way. Generally looking for thoughts. As I never knew what to say and was rubbish at thinking on my feet with this stuff.
English

@DHTDurrant @ITimbrell Ah sorry I was trying to make two points at once. Some teachers I've worked with share a lot and I didn't so it makes it seem like I'm hiding. Also what do I say if a student says "do you have a wife?". "No". "But you're wearing a wedding ring."
English

It can be a difficult decision as to whether LGBT+ members of staff come out to pupils. There’s no one right answer and people have to do what’s right for them.
Here’s my blog about whether staff should come out to their pupils.

English

@DHTDurrant @ITimbrell I agree I'm not a sharer. However if I'm wearing a wedding ring and they ask, what do I say? Most straight teachers say "my wife..." So if I say "it's none of your business" then that could suggest that you need to hide it if you're gay.
English

@ITimbrell When I first started teaching there was NO WAY you would ever even share your first name, your birthday, whether you had a girlfriend/boyfriend, husband/wife, where you lived, nothing personal like that, especially not in the kind of school I was in! What happened to that?

@MathsDotScot ... of the function f defined by f(x)=...
However think it is fine with how it is written.

@KerryDunton @EmporiumMaths @robotmaths @Sheena2907 @Whitehughes But can still be used for questions.
English

@KerryDunton @EmporiumMaths @robotmaths @Sheena2907 @Whitehughes OCR is similar. AQA includes some stuff that is not on CP for Edexcel (that's because 2/3 of the AQA course is compulsory so covers more than the 50% set out by Ofqual).
CIE and Edexcel have international A Levels in further Maths but they are modular and map differently.
English

Further Maths teachers - is the core pure content the same across all boards? I'm trying to find some questions my students haven't already done as they've done all the Edexcel papers. Is there an international FM course? @EmporiumMaths @robotmaths @Sheena2907 @Whitehughes
English

@sonukg4india Surely there are multiple possibilities unless there are restrictions on p.
For example. p(x)=2x - 3√5 works
So p(2)=4-3√5
