Ok no that’s not what Mary Sue means. It means the world bends and even breaks as if designed to fellatio the Character. It originates from fanfics where the Mary Sue had characters behaving out of character just to love her or have her solve problems etc. breaking established lore to do so. The character effectively designed as a self-insert empowerment fantasy. How OP they are or whether or not they fail isn’t really that important. A good chunk of fanfic Mary Sues died at the end even. Obv with original IPs where the world is a blank canvas, breaking lore and chars being out of character doesn’t apply and it’s more abt how the world and characters are designed. The reason Rover is seen as fitting it is bcs of how the story is structured and especially how the lore is framed. Story wise characters routinely get date quests and become paeudo-love interests constantly. Even if only barely knowing eachother. Like Iuno talking abt the Rover and their relationship when they barely just met and became friends. Rover is also routinely saving said waifus or being their inspiration. These are very common power fantasy tropes meant to make the audience self-inserting feel desirable and powerful/badass. And the lore’s framing in particular really does lean into that. The first inklings we get of Rover’s past we get are meant to make the player feel important and the center of the world. Rover found Jinzhou, Rover is Jue’s master, Rover founded Black shores etc. the fact that Rover is a foot soldier in a larger universe spanning war isn’t revealed until 3.1 and even then their special status is never undermined by other Rovers being depicted. Instead Rover is emphasised as a falling star. Yes some of it is Aemeath doesn’t know what the others look like. But it’s also intentional imo that Rover being one amongst legion is never conveyed visually or even in dialogue per say. I don’t think it’s unfair to say that Rover as a character uses a lot of that Prog Fantasy or Isekai trope of having a generic and bland personality to make self-inserting easier and that the game’s story heavily leans into power fantasy in its appeal. And inevitably, that makes them feel extremely mary sue-ish.

@soh_toa most every fight. The fact that they they don't is just poor writing. Rover is a realistic portrayal of an MC with his level of power. Traveler is just the same, except he gets plot induced nerfs
