China blocked the airspace. Germany said no. The Czech Republic said no. Taiwan's president found another way and landed anyway. President Lai Ching-te just arrived in Eswatini, Taiwan's only diplomatic ally in Africa. His greeting: "Sanibonani," the local Swazi word for hello. Simple, human, and pointed. Two weeks ago, this trip was impossible. The Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar revoked overflight permits for Lai's presidential aircraft less than 24 hours before departure, in what Taiwan described as a coordinated act of pressure at China's behest. It marked the first time in history that a Taiwanese president was forced to cancel an entire foreign trip due to airspace denial. Taiwan then made urgent requests to transit through Europe. Germany refused. The Czech Republic refused. So Taiwan found another route. The details have not been fully disclosed. Lai arrived unannounced, posted a photo from the aircraft stairs, and greeted the Swazi people in their own language. Beijing deployed the airspace of three countries to stop a democratic leader from visiting a democratic ally. It pressured two European nations into refusing transit. It failed. Lai is there. Eswatini has held firm as Taiwan's only African partner despite sustained Chinese diplomatic and economic pressure for years. Taiwan has only 12 diplomatic allies left globally. The CCP has spent decades systematically eliminating each one with promises of investment and political pressure. It has not gotten this one yet. L’objectif officiel est de s’entraîner à utiliser ce système dans un environnement isolé, les îles Batanes, avec des simulations de déploiement rapide.
Dans cet exercice militaire, plus de 17 000 soldats participent à ces manœuvres annuelles, dans un contexte de fortes tensions avec la Chine. Ce qui se joue concrètement, c’est le contrôle du détroit de Luzon, un passage maritime clé entre les Philippines et Taïwan.
En y positionnant un système capable de frapper des navires depuis la côte, Washington et Manille montrent qu’ils peuvent menacer toute présence navale dans la zone. C’est un point de passage stratégique pour le commerce, mais aussi pour une éventuelle opération militaire autour de Taïwan.
De cette manière, les États-Unis et les Philippines peuvent transformer des îles isolées en points d’appui militaires capables de bloquer ou dissuader une flotte adverse. Et puis c'est surtout l'occasion d'envoyer un message à Pékin.
La Chine doit voir que toute projection militaire chinoise vers Taïwan serait compliquée et risquée. En parallèle, les États-Unis montrent qu’ils restent pleinement engagés dans la région, et qu’ils préparent activement un scénario de crise.
Face à la menace chinoise, les Philippines sont un acteur majeur de la stabilité en Indo-Pacifique.

Aujourd’hui, des dizaines de milliers de militaires américains sont encore stationnés en Europe, notamment en Allemagne, qui reste un pilier central du dispositif de l’OTAN. On savait depuis des années, et avant même la guerre en Ukraine, que Washington réfléchissait à réduire ses effectifs en Europe. Sur environ 36 000 hommes rien qu'en Allemagne, en perdre 5000 n'est pas bien grave, surtout que Berlin dépense sans compter pour rattraper son retard militaire. Il s’agit davantage d’un ajustement stratégique que d’un désengagement brutal. Les États-Unis reconfigurent leur posture militaire en fonction des priorités géopolitiques du moment, notamment face à la montée en puissance de la Chine et à la guerre en Iran. Ce type de mouvement est classique, et ne signifie pas que l’Europe est abandonnée. Ce qui marque les esprits c'est la manière avec laquelle Pete Hegseth et la Maison Blanche communiquent sur cet événement, comme s'il s'agissait d'une punition contre l'Europe parce que nous ne les avons pas suivis dans leur guerre contre l'Iran. Mais l’idée que la sécurité du continent reposerait uniquement sur quelques milliers de soldats américains ne tient plus vraiment. Surtout, l’Europe, et en particulier l’Allemagne, n’est plus dans la situation de dépendance totale d’après-guerre. Les capacités militaires européennes progressent, les budgets de défense augmentent et des initiatives communes se développent. L’Europe doit continuer à renforcer son autonomie stratégique, il n'y a pas de surprise.

The Japanese, driven by their fear of China’s rise, are attempting to organize an "Asian NATO" — India, Vietnam, and other Southeast Asian nations are its targets. This has been a long-term strategy for Japan. Even the Quad was originally a concept proposed by former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
I’ve always believed that Asian NATO isn't impossible. Country as big as China naturally exerts huge pressure on its neighboring countries in Asia — especially if China uses force to reunify Taiwan, Japan and the U.S. would exploit the fears of neighboring countries at the moment to bring an "Asian NATO" to life, much like how Finland and Sweden quickly joined NATO after Russia invaded Ukraine.
In my view, China’s best strategy would be go directly for Japan instead of Taiwan, and continuously push Sino-Japanese relations to the brink of war, until eventually finding a pretext to launch a third Sino-Japanese war. Once China subdues Japan, an "Asian NATO" would become physically impossible.
Under this strategy, other Asian countries would think: the China-Japan war seems quite real, China doesn’t hate us the way it hates Japan, so why should we help Japan fight China and turn our own countries into ruins? Even the United States — no matter what treaties it has signed with Japan — would not, I believe, dare to confront the PLA directly if China went war with Japan.
Asians are quite smart. They of course will use alliances to boost their own sense of security—but if they realize that the alliance might actually lead them into a destructive war, they'll never join it. Of course, that wouldn’t stop a clever opportunist like Vietnam from making some ambiguous statements, giving desperate Japan the illusion that “Vietnam is on my side” — all for the sake of extracting some economic benefits from an increasingly impoverished Japan.

With zero public announcement, Ottawa got added to a massive $1.1 billion U.S. contract with Lockheed Martin for M142 HIMARS rocket systems.
17 launchers are being built by 2028, and Canada is one of the buyers (they originally wanted up to 26).
After years of dragging its feet on military modernization, Canada is finally getting one of the most lethal and battle-proven long-range artillery systems out there.
