💊 The $860 Million Medicare Oversight
It’s hard to believe, but Medicare is currently overpaying by staggering amounts for single medications. A prime example is the cancer drug Abiraterone.
The Cost Disparity
The price difference between what Medicare pays and what an independent pharmacy can offer is eye-opening:
Medicare Price: $2,800 per prescription
Forest Park Pharmacy Price: $63 per prescription
That is a difference of $2,737 per fill. Nationally, Medicare spends roughly $880 million on this drug annually. If sourced at the lower rate, the system could save $860 million every single year on this one medication alone.
Why Is This Happening?
The system often relies on an "Illusion of Savings." Here’s how the cycle typically works:
High List Prices: Manufacturers set artificially high prices (e.g., $100 for a $25 drug).
Rebate Games: Large rebates are paid to insurers to get the drug on "preferred lists."
The Fallout: While the "net cost" might look lower to the insurer, patient co-pays and premiums are often based on the high list price, not the actual cost.
Taking Control of Your Costs
You don't have to be a victim of the "list price" trap. Forest Park Pharmacy uses transparent pricing that bypasses these inflated markups.

The PAPA bill will strengthen local pharmacies and expand patient access to essential care across New York. Right now, this bill is stalled in the Assembly—even as other legislation, like the patient‑notification bill, moved quickly.
That contrast sends a troubling message: that highlighting barriers to care is being prioritized over actually fixing them.
The Assembly leader needs to hear directly from the people who rely on their pharmacies every day. Let them know that care close to home matters, and that the PAPA bill deserves a vote. @fairychloeee @CarlHeastieNY
