Today’s Black American inventor is Dr. Jane Hinton. Dr. Jane Hinton, alongside Dr. John Howard Mueller, co-developed Mueller-Hinton agar in 1941. Mueller-Hinton agar became — and remains — the gold standard medium worldwide for antibiotic susceptibility testing. When doctors determine which antibiotic will effectively treat a bacterial infection, clinical laboratories commonly use this medium to test whether bacteria are resistant or susceptible to specific drugs.
