Coaches, be careful rewarding the naturally gifted athlete over the one who shows up and works every single day. When you reward lazy talent instead of daily effort, you tear down your culture. The work ethic you reward is the work ethic you get.

The difference between a good high school coach and a great one?
It’s not the playbook.
It’s:
- Holding kids accountable when no one else does.
- Helping them believe in their potential before they see it.
- Teaching them lessons that outlast the game.

Sad news. Richard loved covering local sports. He appreciated small towns & big-time football.
He was spirited & opinionated and he could rock the boat a bit - but he was always entertaining.
He will be missed by generations of players, coaches and teams that appreciated him

The word is getting around, so I have to say something. Rest in peace to @blackhatfootbal. A longtime friend, onetime fantasy football team co-owner and former Modesto Bee colleague, he loved high school football, notably in the 209. I'm crushed tonight. You'll be missed, Rich.

One thing I see that really bothers me at the HS level: Blaming poor tackling on a lack of toughness. At the HS level it’s usually strength, technique, or confidence to trigger downhill.
Identify the issue. Develop the kid.
Coach them up. Most of these kids never learn how to truly tackle anymore until 9th grade. It’s on us to help them!

Coaches must model the qualities they expect from athletes. Consistency, openness, clear communication & owning mistakes are leadership standards. The best coaches stay steady and calm through highs & lows. So the question is: do the coaches truly lead by example in every moment?
