I've tabled a Parliamentary Amendment to remove the huge cut still in the Bill. Halving the UC Health Element for new claimants slashes £2 BILLION from vital support for sick and disabled people. Ask your MP to oppose this cruel cut - and the creation of a two-tier UC system.

SEVERE CONDITION CRITERIA The Green Paper is diminished, but please lobby against the ‘severe condition criteria’—a hugely dangerous and discriminatory change to UC health rules that would drastically increase new claimants’ financial and psychological precarity. #TakingThePIP

Tonight I voted for the Welfare Reform Bill at second reading, but I’ve been clear: if the commitments made aren’t delivered, I reserve the right to oppose it at later stages. 🧵 1/5

It’s welcome that the Government have agreed to substantial changes to their welfare proposals tonight. I thank Ministers for listening to concerns raised. My joint statement with @helenhayes on this evening’s vote 👇🏾

It is not easy to convey parliamentary processes, nor the issues around the UC&PIP Bill. It was not an easy decision to sign the Reasoned Amendment & challenge my party but I stuck with my decision not to support the Bill until major concessions were achieved. Read on 👇

I’m one of 108 Labour MPs who’ve signed the Reasoned Amendment opposing the Universal Credit and PIP Bill. I don’t support the status quo - we need reform of the benefits system. But this Bill isn’t it. We need to pause, consult properly with disabled people, and get this right.
