I’m stealing this from @TRHLofficial because it’s too good to play by the rules when it comes to something so elegant and relevant:
“Richard Stockton had the worst fate of all the founders. He was a signer of the Declaration, and when he pledged his life, fortune, and sacred honor, he meant it.
Stockton was captured and imprisoned as the only signer targeted for the Declaration. He was starved, frozen, and tortured in Provost Prison. His estate was looted and his library burned by British troops. His fortune was ruined. He was forced at gunpoint to make a loyalty oath to Britain. His family was displaced as refugees, and he died of throat cancer at 50, leaving his wife and children destitute.”

The reality is there are Richard Stockton’s alive today in the Republican Party. They’re the principled conservatives who believe in free markets, democratic capitalism, unfettered international commerce and who can be heard preaching hope, growth and opportunity as can only be achieved via constitutional restraint, limited government, lower-taxes, and sound money.
And I almost sort of expect the day when those of us who believe these first principles—in the marrow of our bones—will be cast out of the frayed tent and subjected to the same treatment that Stockton was circa 1776.
