@matthewstoller Uhh, the American people allowed it to happen by re-electing a convicted felon, rapist, pedophile, insurrectionist conman into office! Democracy is about giving the people what they asked for, and giving it good and hard. Here we are.

This Iran fiasco will likely wipe out huge amounts of American prestige and treasure, and reduce our standards of living. We will need a genuine accounting for the leaders across every institution - politics, law, business, banking, academia - who allowed it to happen.

Maybe my circles/the algos are misleading me but while people are upset about the rise in gas prices I haven’t seen much concern/fear about the decline in stock prices yet.

@lymanstoneky I’m a classical liberal on this issue: It’s a decision only the individual can make and they ought to be free to decide (provided they’re of sound mind). I’d want that option myself if diagnosed with ALS, terminal cancer, etc…

@neoavatara They want a meritocracy UNTIL it’s their kid applying for some highly selective program, then you get the whole “well, you just don’t understand how there’s so much more that just test scores…” talk 😒

Let's be honest though: most people really don't want a merit based system. If they did, they'd be ecstatic about the match for residency system, one of the best merit based systems out there. But they aren't. Weird, right?

Across all medical schools, about 1 in 4 enrolled black/Hispanic medical students had a below-average MCAT score. Only 3% of white/Asian students did. A vast preferential treatment exists in admissions to almost every med school. Three schools isn't even the iceberg tip.

@avidseries These games aren’t helping the individual who “gets in” - as if getting in is all that matters. Med school is frigging HARD. If you wash out after 2 years with a mountain of debt, what good is that?

The obvious wealth and inheritance tax compromise is to just eliminate the inheritance tax entirely and have heirs inherit the original cost basis for anything they inherit. You inherit a home that's now worth $3 million? You should inherit the original $300,000 (or whatever) cost basis. In other words, let capital gains be uniform for everyone's assets.

Tell me I’m wrong, but no senior should lose their home over property taxes after paying it off for 30 years.

@VladTheInflator It’s worth what someone is willing to pay for it… I don’t begrudge anyone for getting what their assets are worth. They’re bitching about people making $20/hour, not doing a good job, then wanting a tip on top of that.

You cannot remove all of the highly enriched uranium, nuclear grade, in Iran without going into the tunnels and facilities deep underground to get it.  I don't know what the administration's plan is, but I am guessing this is at least one reason why there are public reports that some of the special forces are being called up and deployed.  For Nancy Mace to say no ground troops or I won't support the war effort is, to me, utterly irresponsible.  The administration is not talking about amassing troops for some big ground campaign, according to public reports.  Mace is now running for governor of South Carolina.  I have never been a fan for several reasons.  I trust the president to make prudential decisions in the military campaign, as he already has.  His use of the military in Iran and Venezuela has been brilliant and precise.

I do not believe anyone can make a deal with the Iranian regime, as seen in the Biden and Obama Administrations. The only way to achieve peace in the region, and stop the Iran’s export of terror, is to completely eliminate the regime in Tehran.

@clintoptions Agree, but the number is more like $8M. A very nice forever home in a nice area is going to realistically cost $2-3M. Expenses of $15k/month will require a $5-6M portfolio to sustain…

I have a secret to share After your first $2–$3 million, a paid off home and a good car, there is no difference in quality of life between you and Jeff Bezos. Both of you have limited amount of time on earth; you have twice if not more than Jeff, so you are richer than him. A cheeseburger is a cheeseburger whether a billionaire eats or you do. Money is nothing but a piece of paper or a number in your app. Real life is outdoors. Become financially independent; that’s usually 2–3mil. Have good food. Enjoy the relations. Workout. Sleep well. Call your parents. That’s all there is to life. Greed has no end. Repeat after me: Time is the currency of life. Money is not. Sooner you figure this out, happier you will be.
