I want VAT scrapped from energy bills - it’s the least people should expect and better than where we were. In fact, Nigel Farage and I were the first to propose this back in March. But it saves just £45. This isn’t enough. Reform UK would go much further, taking £200 off your energy bill, by also scrapping the green taxes that have been loaded on by stealth - paid for by ditching wasteful net zero subsidies. Burnham has chosen to keep them, because he puts net zero zealotry ahead of tackling the cost of living - just like his predecessor. He’s gone an inch, when he could have gone much further. And Burnham’s numbers don’t add up. He says he’ll pay for the VAT cut by scrapping Digital ID. One problem: that measure isn’t in the Government books, so he’s not actually saving the Exchequer any money that’s been committed. It was forecast to cost £1.8 billion, of which £600 million was recurring spend. The VAT cut is going to cost almost £2 billion. So even if the ID money had been found through savings elsewhere, as far as I can tell, three quarters of it is unfunded. That’s Burnhamomics. Where is the rest of the money coming from? The same goes for defence spending, which is presumably about to go up with John Healey as Chancellor. Like Reform, he could find savings from spending on foreign aid, welfare waste, net zero, bloated quangos, but Labour would never wear it. Beyond that, what can he cut? schools, the NHS, the police? So, we’re looking at tax rises. Hikes that no one voted for. In fact, Burnham has called for £38 billion in tax rises in recent times or £3,450 for every family. He’s refused to rule them out. I can’t help but notice that half of Burnham’s cabinet, including the Prime Minister, served under Gordon Brown. John Healey used to carry Brown’s bags at the Treasury. This Government will end the same way — with the economy even more broken than it is today, and working people paying the price.

@SuellaBraverman I don't think she was very wedded to the reforms to be fair. She's probably quite glad to be told to water them down.

They were insufficient to begin with but this is highly likely given Burnham’s politics, Labour backbench rebellion and the fact that this Cabinet is more left-leaning than its predecessor. Only Reform will fix the immigration crisis.

Someone please correct me if I’m wrong, Burnham has appointed: - a Housing Secretary who “resigned” in disgrace from the same job because she couldn’t even pay the correct stamp duty on her 2nd house - a previously sacked convicted fraudster who will be in charge of ethics in the Cabinet Office - a Business Secretary that had to apologise to parliament over misleading CV statements - a Chancellor who couldn’t count how many frigates we had in our fleet when he was defence secretary - a Defence Secretary with no military experience (despite multiple ex-servicemen available) So much for the “hope” vibes.

The sackings are better than watching Argentina lose and throw a tantrum. But prepare yourself. A new clown cabinet is coming!

It has been the greatest privilege of my life, coming from humble beginnings in Tottenham, to serve in government as @Keir_Starmer’s Foreign Secretary, Justice Secretary and Britain’s first Black Deputy Prime Minister. I am immensely proud of what we achieved, in Opposition and in Government. As Foreign Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister, I helped rebuild Britain’s relationships with our European allies after the catastrophic Brexit years, stood steadfastly with Ukraine in its darkest hours, championed a new partnership of equals with the Global South and was proud to play a leading role in Britain’s recognition of the State of Palestine. I worked to secure the Special Relationship with the United States in a new era and deepened our partnerships with the Gulf and India to deliver trade, growth and security for the British people. As Justice Secretary and Lord Chancellor, I put record investment in our courts to begin stabilising the backlog for victims left waiting too long for justice, put in changes to take our prisons back from the brink to prevent a collapse in prison capacity ever again, put massive investment in the probation service and victims and helped deliver the Hillsborough Law. I also put in place a new approach to improving the diversity of our judiciary and made the Ministry of Justice a Whitehall leader in harnessing the potential of artificial intelligence. I would have been proud to continue serving in Cabinet. But a new Prime Minister is entitled to build his own team, and I wish @AndyBurnham and the new Cabinet every success. I will continue to serve the great people of Tottenham, support this Labour government from the backbenches and do everything I can to help defeat Reform again at the next general election.

For too long, we’ve been told that ending rough sleeping will take decades or even that it's impossible. I'm not having that. This is something a government can fix if it chooses to. Today, I’m choosing to. The Passage are an organisation leading the way on this - I was proud to chat to their team this morning.

I wish Andy Burnham every success as Prime Minister. But it is my job to hold him to account. Every announcement he makes should be properly funded. We cannot borrow more money and the tax burden is already too high, so the only answer is spending cuts. I will work with him in the national interest to find savings from the benefits bill. If we reach agreement, my Conservative MPs will vote for those cuts in Parliament. That's the way to get Britain working.
