You know why this exploit is hurting all of us? It's because bitcoin is money; our limited lifetime of work in decentralised, abstracted form. Anything else is an abomination to those who have stored those precious hours of work. Run Knots BIP110. RBF disabled.

@callebtc The thing is - even if it was discovered, what should they do? The moment they publish the vulnerability, everyone could get exploited (and nobody would have bought their devices anymore). It’s a shitty situation. They cloud have at least patch it silently, though.

it’s incredible that no security audit has found the coldcard deterministic RNG bug. it’s arguably the most important line of code in the firmware. they’ve done external security audits with real security researches right? …right?!

Never thought I would have to unfollow Marty. TFTC was the podcast that truly got me started on my Bitcoin journey. There was only one thing that bothered me about his podcasts and it was the near constant hocking of the ColdCard. Every single episode had an ad for it, and he always talked about it as the standard. I never trusted this because ads about security products always made me uncomfortable. If the product was so great, why did it need to be sold? Now, Marty, Odell and the “expert” cabal are proving that they never verified. They trusted. And they pied-pipered hundreds of Bitcoiners to their losses. They say to slay your heroes. This one hurts.

Why are you trying to dunk on everyone who recommended coldcard? The reason this hits so hard is because they were seen as the best. Even people who read the code continued using it. Pretending like Alex, Natalie, or whoever, somehow should have known that this was gonna happened is absolutely insane. Like wanna be influencers trying to make a name for themselves on folks who are as shocked and appalled as the rest of it. It’s a huge fuck up. But yeah, you’re blaming the wrong people.

@mshodl @ErinEMalone Wrong. These people should not have recommended Coldcard as they did not fully understand it. They made money out of it. Are they gonna repaid the funds ???

URGENT: I’ve seen people saying that they are on vacation and won’t be able to check their coldcard for days until they get back. If you have one of the affected coldcards and can’t get back in time please call a trusted person, have them go to where your device is stored and walk them through the procedure to transfer funds over FaceTime. Don’t have a spare key to your house? Have them smash open a window, or kick down a door. I am not joking. Normally this would obviously be horrible advice but under these circumstances I think it has the potential to save someone’s coins. Attacks are increasing not decreasing and attackers are starting to crack through the affected mk3’s with pass phrases. There are even credible reports of mk4’s with pass phrases being hit. You are in a race against motivated and malicious people wanting to steal your wealth. PLEASE This is a crazy post. I get it, but we are in crazy times. If you are in this specific situation, throw the regular rules out the window and do what you must in order to save your coins. DONT WAIT.

Bitcoin will never scale if: 1. Everyone is meant to verify code 2. Everyone is meant to run a node 3. Everyone is meant to know what an XPub is I've said this all the time - maxis scream at me, I am still right, they are still wrong. They are out of touch with normal people. I know some of you are like, well I did it, don't trust verify - well done nerd, but you are a tiny tiny minority. Sure there will be a hardcore group who will do all this, the nerds that keep the system honest. Normal people will keep on exchanges, use ETFs, sometimes single sig. If you get someone to multi-sig, well done, it will be rare, but well done. Many will just trust well structured institutional products. Cry as much as you like, I was right before and I am still right.

Every full node validates independently under its own rules. That part is true. In a split, however, the chain that keeps the Bitcoin ticker, liquidity, and exchange support is the one markets follow. A hobbyist node and an exchange serving millions are not economically equivalent. Node counts do not override economic weight.

Less than 1% of Bitcoin’s economic weight has adopted BIP-110. The claim that 16%-18% of nodes equals 16%-18% support confuses software distribution with economic consensus. Bitcoin is not one node, one vote.

Nodes enforce rules for their own view of the chain. They do not cast equal votes that decide the network. Bitcoin follows the chain with the most work accepted by economic actors—miners, exchanges, custodians, and capital. A node holding zero bitcoin has the same technical validation power as any other, yet zero economic weight. That distinction is why node counts do not equal support.

A soft fork like BIP-110 tightens rules so enforcing nodes reject non-compliant blocks. With its UASF design (55% miner signal or mandatory period), a minority of nodes can start their own chain by orphaning non-signaling blocks. That produces a potential split: the BIP-110 chain only advances with its (currently ~2-3%) hashrate, while the majority continues under existing rules. Node counts do not decide which survives—economic weight (exchanges, holders, liquidity) does. Low support means the minority fork stays minority unless markets move to it.

BIP-110 is a temporary proposal to tighten Bitcoin rules and limit non-payment data (images, tokens, etc.) that some call spam. Saylor notes that claims of 16-18% support based on node counts mix up software installs with real backing. Actual economic weight (hashrate, capital, major players) behind it is under 1%. Underlying point: Bitcoin consensus is not one node, one vote. It follows economic power, not software distribution.
