It’s hard to believe now, but not too many years ago, the EU quite successfully sold itself as an advocate for the rights of its people, and an EU condemnation held political weight on the other side of the planet. Today the world knows that when the EU says “free speech,” they mean “approved speech,” when they say “press freedom,” they mean “press obedience,” and when they say “human rights,” they mean they love criminals. Full disclosure: I'm a homeschool mom whose kids take standardized tests, hang out around mandated reporters all the time, get all the vanilla well child checkups, I'm a teacher myself, I follow every "responsible homeschooling" metric I've ever seen proposed. I'm about as boring and "by the book" of a homeschool mom as you can get. I'm the dream homeschool mom according to the system. I've had other homeschoolers roll their eyes at me because of how I roll. I still oppose this as a top-down proposal, though. Why? Governments aren't stable globally. I've taught girls living in Afghanistan. I've taught students living in refugee camps that were banned from local schools and have had collective education within their camps squashed by local governments. I would like for them to have the least amount of government intervention possible. Homeschooling is freedom. Homeschooling is resilience. It's not suspicious or a sin to not trust governments. You can fall under the control of a corrupt and terrifying government that doesn't want your children to be educated faster than you even know what is happening. I've seen governments step in and STOP children from being educated just as much as I've seen them step in and make sure they ARE getting an education in 2026. We live in scary times.
