@Peter_Strachan It seems pumping immigration to give business cheap labour has done the opposite, sustaining inflation and sending these businesses bust

The inflationary impact of Australia's rapid population growth is now killing small businesses! Bringing in a Canberra and a Hobart each year but 8.5% of cafes went bust last year and 10% are predicted to go bust in 2025. macrobusiness.com.au/2025/01/7-coff…

And just like that; I am now blocked by @doctorKarl. I hear I am now a member of a rather large group. Let’s not let science get in the way of a bit of ideology; eh?
Jonathan Fisher, The Australian Uranium Guy@CxuAsx

I have lost a huge amount of respect for @DoctorKarl. I grew up listening to @triplej and loving Dr Karl’s segments. I too identify as a science nerd. Blocking @ShackelWill because you disagree with his views about nuclear energy? Dr Karl. Do better.

@blueskymine01 @nascentjude A couple of years back a woman pointed out to me this was one of the worst adverse effects of the rental crisis, people trapped in abusive situations. Wasn't something I hadn't fully considered being a bloke who lives alone.

@nascentjude Absolutely If there were cheap rentals people can move to get away from it Often now they are trapped

Insane spike Labor came to power in 2022 and there’s been a 52% rise in domestic violence Any takers on what’s caused this? Financial stress from inflation, people trapped and can’t move as they’ll become homeless, can’t afford to relocate due to rental costs?

@pfh007 @PaulBongiorno Yes, if the amount is controlled they could safely cut the rate. If it was controlled in the first place these recent rate rises wouldn't have been so stressful.

@PaulBongiorno You are identifying problems with excessive household debt. The solution to excessive debt is regulating the peddling of debt to households not reducing the cost of taking on more debt.

The welcome fall in unemployment is a sure fire sign that the economy is struggling to address supply side driven inflation The RBA needs to look at all the factors behind a tanking economy and rethink jobs as an indicator.

@EnergyJvd Possibly also a really stupid person who hasn't thought this through, as I imagine even members of the Taliban actually like their wives & wouldn't want to lose them. Or he really, genuinely, utterly hates women.

@AvidCommentator @pauliec80859931 Am I correct in thinking that $15k to childcare will add to GDP, but a stay at home parent temporarily out of the workforce probably shrinks it, which would be viewed as 'bad', even if the quality of life outcome is better for that family?

That is fascinating, I wasn't aware that was the case. It certainly makes a great deal of sense. Unfortunately it seems like the value of stay at home parents and other caregivers is increasingly diminished in the eyes of policymakers at the very least. Yet the taxpayer will fork out over 15k year in subsidies to send the average kid to childcare.

In my view a rising labour force participation rate is not an inherent positive. If people are being forced into the labour force because they simply can't afford to live on what would have historically been a comfortable household income percentile, that is not a good thing.

@AvidCommentator @MSado96 @jaiparker79 Maybe, but it's quite a cultural shift from the present (Anglo?) norm of moving out to be independent, to a more extended family style arrangement. But yes, better than a shite apartment. Also, current postage stamp sized housing lots work against this.

@GHCuthbertson @MSado96 @jaiparker79 I wonder if attitudes on that are going to change. Given the reality of life in Australia these days, a good sized granny flat in the backyard might start to become a pretty appealing prospect for a partner. It sounds wacky, but compared with apartment Russian roulette...🤷‍♂️

@drsmithy @AvidCommentator That they've managed to do this with what could only be seen as the gift of Dutton as opposition leader underlines the level of failure.

@AvidCommentator The amount of political capital utterly wasted by this Government is mind-boggling. They could have been in power for 10+ years and turned the entire country around. I cannot find words to describe the magnitude of their fuckup.

If these numbers play out in reality, Dutton has a shot at majority government, Albo does not. A truly astounding state affairs given no first term federal government has lost power in over a century without being bushwhacked by the Depression.

@outbreakupdates Genuine question, I'm sure cooking will deactivate any active virus, but does handling the raw meat pose any additional risk that normal food hygiene procedures like washing hands & guarding against cross contamination protects against?

@WallWall39796 @climatecouncil True, not to mention we aren't talking about consumer durables like cars, but large public infrastructure where it's perfectly reasonable to expect it to run for decade after decade if maintained.

You wouldn’t expect a 40-year-old car to keep running smoothly, we can’t rely on ageing coal-fired power stations to deliver during extreme heat. Big renewables backed by batteries are delivering about 40% of our power and are resilient in hot conditions.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-2…

@clairlemon Never really used Instagram & it sounds like I never will if it's just all AI slop. It's bad enough on youtube, I've noticed a lot of AI generated videos polluting the platform over the last yr or so, it's such garbage that I expect a reaction demanding real content at some point

@Crocodylus121 I like that. Also, just another announceable, where are the houses going to be built? who is going to build them? what are the rents? how many will be offered that 5 yr lease 'option'? are there any controls on frequency & amount of rent increases?
