Trump’s tariff war on Canada is hitting autos, steel and manufacturing hard. So it’s not surprising that Ontario is feeling the most pain. New StatsCan numbers show just how bad the first year of Trump has been to the province’s workforce. cdhowe.org/publication/th…

After nearly a year of significant disruption, lasting changes to the trade and economic landscape are coming into focus. Governments around the world are taking tentative steps to adjust, including launching new initiatives like the Future of Investment and Trade Partnership (FIT-P) and repurposing existing arrangements, especially building on the CPTPP. While these efforts are to be applauded, progress remains painfully slow even as the stakes grow swiftly higher every day. If the past months of dealing with chaos were insufficient to persuade governments to move quicker, what else would it take? Deborah Elms, our Head of Trade Policy, asks: buff.ly/PK48veu #GlobalTrade #FITP #CPTPP #FTA #TradeAgreements

With the Canada-US relationship at an all-time low, China has moved quickly to position itself as a beneficiary. Canadians should be wary. Yet we’re seeing growing numbers of Canadians twisting the logic of “the enemy of my enemy is my friend.” They’re taking this to mean that the enemy of Canada is the United States, and by that logic, the People’s Republic of China must be Canada’s friend. To offer his perspective on how Canadians should view these developments, Dr. Stephen Nagy @nagystephen1—a professor at Tokyo’s International Christian University, and a senior fellow at the Macdonald-Laurier Institute—joins Inside Policy Talks. He tells Jamie Tronnes, executive director of @CNAPS_, that the Chinese government has “invested very heavily” in a strategy of “elite capture” focused on political and business leaders.” “I think that this has made Canada have tremendous challenges in terms of confronting a country that really wants to change the global order in a way that is contrary to Canadian interests,” says Nagy. The Hinrich Foundation analyzes President Trump's possible ways of imposing his protectionist agenda after his IEEPA tariffs were struck down.
Hinrich Foundation@hinrichfdn

A US federal court of appeals upheld a lower court ruling striking down Trump’s IEEPA-justified tariffs, including all #tariffs imposed on a so-called “reciprocal” basis. But the president still has plenty of fallback strategies to implement his #protectionist agenda. As Washington continues to negotiate with trading partners, South Korea’s deal may be in question after the largest #immigration raid to date on a #Hyundai site in Georgia. Meanwhile, some of the reasons underlying the rift between the US and India are coming to light. Check out what we’ve been reading: buff.ly/USDO3Lv #readinglist
