A lot of people are talking big man about the Falkland Islands. Our military capacity has waned, chronically. We are unable to defend our shores from small inflatable dinghies of single men from hostile states. Over the size of our army has entered the country within Keir Starmer’s term alone. This is how vulnerable we are. Small inflatable dinghies are destroying one of the greatest naval powers in the history of the entire world. If you wrote it, it would be one of the largest humiliation rituals ever written. Someone must be laughing - somewhere. That aside, we must visualise the reality of our situation. We don’t want to lose strategic territory, because as our ancestors appreciated, geopolitics is just that. It’s geopolitics. I look back and think that I wonder if Great Britain and its people knew their own fragility, hence their need to expand across the globe. They were able to foresee many things, but certainly not that which has happened now. No one would have guessed this, almost. We need to negotiate. We need to start forming multi-lateral relationships across the globe. Decide who is our friend and who is not. Who can we work with. Who can we not. We may not have a huge military force, but we still have intelligence, and enough soft power that the whole world and his or her dog - or not - wants to come here. We are a tiny, tiny island and we must start playing to our strengths, not our weaknesses, and being strategic. Does Trump want to make a deal on the Falklands? Why is he doing it? What larger geopolitical picture is there. How can we work it out, without military force.

Uninsured British mum Helen Barratt and her 19-year-old daughter Nell are stranded in a Montenegro hospital with life-changing injuries after being hit by a car just three hours into their holiday.
