The U.S. housing stock is the oldest it's been, and a home's age is the strongest predictor of fire death risk. One solution: Ease zoning to allow more modern apartments to be built—ones that firefighters like Erich Roden would feel safe living in. pewtrsts.org/4oUmG3J

It's official - last night, Boulder voted to eliminate minimum parking requirements for all new development citywide! 👏 The city's had parking minimums since 1954, which has forced builders to oversupply parking, resulting in empty lots, less housing, & higher rents. By our count, over 20 local governments have updated their codes in the last year to at least get rid of parking minimums for housing near transit to comply with Colorado's HB24-1304. Like Boulder, a lot of cities are going above & beyond the state minimum.

America is missing 2.5 million low-cost housing units from the decimation of single-room occupancies (SROs). Replacing them with modern micro-units could help ensure that more people can afford a place to live. pewtrsts.org/45aN7ef

6/ Some states are taking action: 🏘️ Washington, Hawaii & Oregon now require cities to allow microunits. 🏡 Colorado, Oregon and Iowa and passed a “Golden Girls” law to legalize shared housing. These reforms are helping bring back low-cost options

1/ 🧵 We didn’t lose the most affordable housing—we dismantled it. For decades, single-room occupancy (SRO) units quietly served as the lowest-cost housing option in American cities. Here's what happened—and what we can do now. ⬇️

Good point, Senator @HawleyMO "Under this… they can charge whatever their expenses are on an overdraft, and if that’s more than $5 per overdraft, they’re allowed to charge that, but they’re not allowed to charge anything more.” politico.com/live-updates/2…

The housing crunch is affecting every state—but Arizona has been hit particularly hard. To improve rental affordability, increase homeownership, and reduce homelessness in the state, zoning laws need to change. pew.org/4hyluP9

Wow—Texas senate just overwhelmingly passed a bill to allow starter homes. This could make waves on housing policy across the US @TXReasSolutions

🚨BREAKING: SB 15 PASSES THE TEXAS SENATE 28-3! 🚨 A big win for Texas Housing Affordability and homebuyers! 🏡 SB 15, a Lt. Gov. @DanPatrick priority, just passed 28-3 and is now headed to the Texas House! With housing costs skyrocketing and Texas facing a shortfall of 306,000 homes, we must act! SB 15 cuts minimum lot sizes by government but allows the private sector developers to combine them as needed to produce the housing stock we need in cities above 150k in population. It cuts overburdensome local regulations, eliminates restrictive lot-size mandates, and allows more starter homes and townhomes to be built in the 18 largest Texas cities. ✅ More affordable housing options ✅ Freedom for property owners ✅ Faster development to meet demand Now it’s the House’s turn to deliver! Let’s slash red tape and help more Texans achieve the dream of homeownership! #txlege @tppf @TXManufacturers @TexasFarmBureau @Habitat_org @txbiz @TXRealtors @TXCatholic @TXArchitects @Texas_Builders @TexansHousing @JoshuaFechter @bradj_TX @GrooganFox26 @hollyhansen @texasinsider @hannahnorton89 @ByNickEWoot @baylisswagner @RASchuetz @_Justinsayers

Until recently, Seattle, New York, and Honolulu were the only U.S. cities that allowed apartment buildings up to 6 stories to have just 1 stairway. More cities and towns should follow suit—it'd provide much-needed housing without risking anyone's safety. pew.org/4kkBh76

In Colorado, we are laser-focused on cutting housing costs and increasing the supply of new housing that Coloradans can afford. In my State of the State address, I called for Smart Stair reform to increase the supply of housing people can afford in the neighborhoods where people want to live near transit and job centers. This new study shows that smart stair buildings are less costly to build and are safer. ow.ly/NhEp50Vc1v4
