The people we should be supporting in the #UkraineRussiaWar are the ones rejecting the slaughter, deserting either army and fleeing the country. No one wins this, war isn't a team sport. It's a massive human sacrifice in which both governments are complicit.

@GamerApocalymon @ryangrim The US hasn't even tried. But marines are moving right now so that might change. @grok compare the military capabilities of the GCC combined vs that of Iran, considering the recent losses inflicted by the US Israel war.

If this ends with European and Asian and African countries paying Iran to get oil through the strait, that is actually a fairly stable arrangement because all parties will have an incentive to keep it stable (except of course Israel and the U.S., the real source of global instability)
Saagar Enjeti@esaagar

BTW when Trump says to other countries to "go get your own oil": They won't do so militarily. They will pay Tehran's hostage toll consolidating their control over the Strait and massively enriching the regime

@Calamondins1 @ryangrim with what army? If the US, which is both the GCC's historic protector and one of the world's strongest militaries, isn't able to do it, is there any realistic alternative? The UAE's Colombian mercenaries aren't exactly able to open the strait

@ryangrim The GCC will be massively disadvantaged if this happens, and all of the other countries will have to pay much more for oil- this is the basis for military action led by the GCC with most countries on their side (because they want cheaper oil).

@caoloc @ryangrim it's absolutely unfair and I'm not happy about it, this isn't the fault of the countries getting hit but after all the shit the US put them through it's totally understandable that they revert to the law of the jungle, international law failed them and they need to rebuild

@ryangrim Does Iran really have a legitimate claim on the Straits to levy a toll? Did they build it, enhanced or did some value add changes? No, it's just strong arm bullying no different from the street thug asking for protection money

I know I’m just shouting into the void when I say this because the incentives of social media don’t encourage it but I really wish that people on the left on here didn’t treat every minor strategic disagreement or different interpretation of events as tantamount to condemnable betrayal. I wish the most histrionic and hyperbolic voices didn’t drive every conversation. I wish that there wasn’t such an urge to take the worst faith reading of every post by every person that aligns with you 99% for cheap epic dunks. Feels like all we spend our time on is rooting out the heretics as if we have the kind of power over politics to where that would be a good use of energy rather than just a self inflicted wound. It all feels so very self defeating. I don’t even know why I’m posting this because it won’t change anything but it’s beyond frustrating to see people spending all their time burning witches instead of building a place to discuss ideas that move our ideology forward. Oh well lol.

@PLCROSSTALK can you keep it at the US and EU? Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan are nowhere near in the same ballpark of complicity, there's (deeply shameful, don't get me wrong) diplomatic support to appease a major ally and then there's actually joining in the slaughter

I encourage the entire non-western world to design and implement a containment policy against the US, its European and Asian vassals. The U.S. and its vassals are simply poisonous. They permit genocide - the rest of us don’t. Genocide is the ultimate red line.

@tonyannett You can't build social democracy with American levels of wealth inequality in the first place. Breaking their power isn't optional, if you don't do something like this, and show the public real benefits from doing so, they just buy the next election and undo all your hard work.

@sarobertsonca If you are not trying to persuade other people to see your point of view, you have no business leading a political party, *especially* an opposition party. You need more voters! If this is really how he thinks, then no wonder Mulcair couldn't build on Layton's success...

Tom Mulcair responds to Avi Lewis' criticism: "Mr. Lewis seems to be more intent on convincing other people that he's right and getting them to see his point of view than in dealing with the real differences that exist across Canada and he doesn't even want to run in a byelection."

@last_futurist There's one image on that which is absolutely based (the lefter of the two images under the fascist tricolor), and it's also the one point directly relevant to their real world experience. It's a pity the rest contradicts it, but I think pointing that out is the opening you need.

@N_ticx @DiscordAddamsX The stuff I mentioned is in the constitution, just like term limits. What makes term limits different? And I thought it was common knowledge that Trump attempted a coup near the end of his first term, to try to overturn his election defeat? It was major news when it happened.

@thndrBddy @rushicrypto Your town has a budget, set by law. You can (usually, I can't speak for everywhere in the world I guess) look up said budget on your hometown's website. You can even, in many places, become one of the people voting on it. Local politics aren't that hard to get into.

How many fucking taxes pay for roads? All of them? Do all the taxes pay for roads? Why can’t anyone come up with any first example other than roads? The question is rhetorical because the answer is obvious; people have no fucking clue what the government does with our tax dollars

I’m very confused about the number of people who think “property tax” is a sales tax on you home rather than taxes to pay for public services you use every day. “I paid off my home why do i still pay property taxes?!?!?” Oh, did you also stop using the roads and libraries and sidewalks and parks? Not worried about fires anymore?
