Yet you called it propaganda. Some journalist you are. For the record, a key Fanno/TPLF difference: There is no central command to carefully craft and distribute. Low level rivalry among Fanno groups, a population free to share its views, and virtually free access means no good or bad news passes through unchecked.

@Solomon_A_D Let me be clear: I cannot confirm or reject the veracity of this particular story. But it has all the hallmarks of Lucy Kassa-style atrocity propaganda. And shouldn't the burden of proof be on those making the accusation?

In the 2020-22 war in northern Ethiopia, the Fano militia learned from the TPLF rebels how incredibly effective atrocity propaganda is at fundraising and mobilizing for an ethnonationalist insurgency. Fano has since taken leaf after leaf out of the TPLF's playbook. Credibility springs from notions about "the dark continent", drawing parallels to Rwanda 30 years ago, while dissemination benefits from our modern era's social-media outrage algorithms. Thus, the hashtag #TigrayGenocide became fashionable in 2020 and 2021, and has since inspired Fano supporters' #AmharaGenocide and also OLA supporters' #OromoGenocide, all three of them intended to justify the violent pursuit of power against an elected government. However, one TPLF trick that Fano has largely failed to master, thank God, is to get opportunistic Western journalists to repackage anonymous witnesses' claims and skillful fabrications as true-story Africa reporting. Why? Well, first of all, the newcomers of Fano lack the TPLF old guard's vast and powerful international network. And perhaps, though I am probably engaging in wishful thinking here, but just perhaps, the world did, after all, learn a little something from getting that previous war so dead wrong.

One of dictator Abiy Ahmed Ali’s terror victims is young Bealem Wase. A member of Fano Resistance Movement. She was captured by government troops while fighting. Fano fighters handed over prisoners of war to Red Cross recently but coward government troops mutilated Bealem Wase by skinning a tattoo of her body and cutting her breasts. This is a barbarism by definition. Naked terror! Abiy Ahmed must be condemned and forced to stop the war on the Amhara people! @thehill @washingtonpost @AJEnglish @dwnews @dw_amharic @USEmbassyAddis @ICRC

Unlikely as Aswan already trapped silt that flows from Ethiopia. Fertile New soil for food production is becoming less and less important as existing ones can be used again and again. Destroying Ethiopian highlands for silt ultimately harms Egypt, as desert encroaches rain fails.

Egypt, Ethiopia and the Dam: What If The Real Fight Is Over Soil, Not Water? Nearly everyone says Egypt and Ethiopia are fighting over water from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), which Addis Ababa officially inaugurated on September 9 to great fanfare. That’s the polite version. The real story could be muddier — literally. The big picture people are insisting that what Egypt fears losing isn’t just water, but the soil that the Nile carried from the Ethiopian highlands for thousands of years, laying down a fresh carpet of rich earth across the Nile Valley and Delta. Pharaohs and peasants alike depended on that rhythm: the water came, the soil came, and the desert bloomed. The Nile has two parents. The White Nile rises from Lake Victoria, flowing out of Jinja, Uganda, drifting lazily through South Sudan, spreading wide and slow, as if unsure of its purpose. Along the way, it loses most of its soil in vast swamps like the Sudd. The Blue Nile, by contrast, is all energy and anger — tumbling down from Ethiopia’s steep highlands, gouging hillsides and scooping up an astonishing 120 million tonnes of fertile soil every year. Contrary to what most people think, the GERD built on this Blue Nile, almost 900Km away from the main trunk of the Nile at Khartoum that flows onward to Egypt (look carefully at the maps). But here’s the rub. More than 90% cent of the Nile’s total sediment comes from these Ethiopian Highlands — mainly through the Blue Nile and the Atbara rivers. The Blue Nile alone contributes about 70 to 75% of it. The White Nile, despite its fame, contributes less than 3%, because most of its sediment is trapped in wetlands. When the Blue Nile meets the White Nile at Khartoum, the river turns deep brown — Africa’s longest artery now thick with Ethiopia’s soil, flowing north to Egypt. That silt built Egypt. Before modern dams, the Nile carried roughly 120 to 160 million tonnes of sediment into Egypt each year. The annual floods dropped a new layer of rich earth across the Nile Valley and Delta. That was Egypt’s natural fertiliser, replenishing its land for free. The Nile didn’t just bring water; it brought life in liquid soil form. Then came the dams. The Aswan High Dam gave Egypt control of the floods, but it was also disastrous – it stopped almost all that silt. The river still flowed, but its magic was gone. The Delta began to shrink, and the coastline erode. Saltwater crept inland. Egyptian farmers had to replace nature’s gift with chemical fertilisers. Now Ethiopia’s GERD, the largest dam in Africa, stands on the Blue Nile ready to trap even more of that ancient cargo of soil. Studies suggest it could hold back over 90%!!! of the sediment that once flowed downstream. For Ethiopia, that’s good news — those same sediments have long been a curse, eroding farms and choking smaller dams. Now GERD promises to hold back both the floods and the mud, fuelling Ethiopian progress and protecting its highlands. Egypt’s unease, then, isn’t really about who gets more water. It’s about the vanishing soil — the slow fading of the river’s gift (Ethiopian soil erosion) that built its civilisation. The Nile that once gave Egypt life is now keeping Ethiopia’s soil at home. And for the first time in history, Egypt must face the desert without the brown gold that once floated faithfully down from the upstream highlands. Its natural subsidy has vanished.

Eritrea stands as the central gravity force of the Horn of Africa, a nation whose principled stance on sovereignty, regional stability, and cooperation continues to shape the future of this strategic region. In today’s meeting between H.E. Osman Saleh, Foreign Minister of the State of Eritrea, and Mr. Massad Fares Boulos, U.S. Senior Advisor for African Affairs, both sides reaffirmed the importance of dialogue grounded in mutual respect and constructive engagement. Eritrea underscored its readiness to contribute meaningfully to peace, security, and development across the Horn, the Nile Basin, and the Red Sea regions vital to international trade and stability. This engagement represents an important step in exploring avenues for a new chapter of U.S.–Eritrea relations, one that recognizes Eritrea’s indispensable role as a stabilizing anchor in the Horn of Africa and a committed advocate for sustainable development and regional cooperation 🇪🇷🤝🇺🇸 #Eritrea #HornOfAfrica #RedSea #NileBasin #RegionalStability #PeaceAndSecurity #US #Diplomacy #UNGA80 #Partnership #Development #Sovereignty

I do not selectively learn history; I learn it in its entirety. The historical fact is that Eritrea was Ethiopian territory. Its creation was a hostile act orchestrated by outside forces, and its continued existence has been maintained not for the benefit of its people, but as an instrument of aggression against Ethiopia—primarily by Egypt. Under these conditions, Ethiopia retains the right to act. International laws and treaties are only valid insofar as they preserve peace. Furthermore, any treaty must be enforceable. Eritrea lacks the power to enforce a colonial-era treaty against Ethiopia, just as Egypt couldn't on the Nile. Therefore, for Ethiopia, all options remain open. For Eritrea, there are none. That is the undeniable reality. Let me be clear: Ethiopia would not need to invade Eritrea to reduce it to a wasteland. We need only borrow from Isaias Afwerki's own playbook and employ the very tactics he used against us. Eritrea will be part of Ethiopia—either the easy way, or the hard way.

@GammoGeleta @G_Haile PP Cadre, all African countries' territories were created by colonial treaties. Egypt has no say on Eritrea independence except eritreans who fought bravely for 30 years for their self-determination denied them by super powers in the 1950s. So my advice is to go learn history 101

One could argue that Eritrea's creation was a colonial injustice that Ethiopia has a right to correct. The secession was achieved by rebel groups who capitalized on a weakened Ethiopia during the Cold War, heavily backed by Egypt. That arrangement was never sustainable. The geopolitical context has now changed. Egypt's influence has waned, and Eritrea cannot bear the sustained pressure from a stronger Ethiopia. By delaying reconciliation, the Eritrean government is merely extending its people's hardship. The inevitable must be faced; it is time to negotiate a future of mutual benefit instead of clinging to an unsustainable status quo.

@G_Haile These ignorant PP cronies don't know international law. Eritrea has never been part of Ethiopia except 39 years by force. Eritrea has a clear territory based on colonial treaty, so the TPLF led ethiopia gov has no say in 1991 or 1993 except Eritrean people.

The crisis he created with the help of Egyptian intelligence services. And yes we remember the 100 years headache he promised us. But one thing Ethiopians adversaries did in all of history is they underestimate Ethiopians resilience. Ethiopians always bounce back. Isayas as a true parasite wanted to exploit the African isolation of the 60s & 70s. things have changed. Africa will leapfrog the decaying west & the overheating east. Egypt is checkmated by GERD. Ethiopia is bouncing back with vengeance.

The almost prophetic political analysis of President Isaias Afwerki is so profound that it is scary. Look at a paragraph from a book written in 2002 by Robert D Kaplan. Afwerki's strategy seems to be the following. As he put it, "The increasing social and economic marginalization of Africa will be a fact of life for a very long time to come." #Ethiopia, in particular, he went on, will weaken internally as the Oromos and others demand more power. Its ethnic-Tigrean president, Meles Zenawi, already lives inside a vast security apparatus designed for his own protection. Meanwhile, across the Red Sea in Yemen oil and water are running out, even as the number of armed youth swells: the political order of significant parts of Arabia could be the victim. ..." At the top of the page it also says #Eritrea also boasts deep-water port facilities at #Massawa and #Assab, strategically placed a the mouth of the #RedSea

We recognize that Prime Minister Abiy is exploiting a legitimate Ethiopian concern—the injustice stemming from Eritrea—to strengthen his own grip on power. History shows that if this injustice remains unresolved, future leaders will likely do the same.Isaias Afwerki was aware of this vulnerability and actively sowed conflict in Ethiopia for that very reason. But Ethiopia's resilience has consistently surpassed the expectations of those who have tried to harm it. It is better to accept this reality than to futilely attempt the impossible: keeping Ethiopia choked forever. The geopolitical landscape has also shifted. With the GERD, Egypt—the main sponsor of Eritrea's disruptive role in Ethiopia—has been checkmated. The return of a stable natural order and lasting peace in the Horn is now inevitable; it is only a matter of time.

Red sea is Ethiopian natural sea outlet. Since Ottoman Turks the occupation and creation of Eritrea was an act of aggression against Ethiopia by outside forces. No law can legitimize that. Eritrea is a joke, a garrison created to continue the aggression against Ethiopia, not for the well-being of its residents. Ethiopia has no option but to reclaim its territory for peace to prevail in the region.

A Plea to All Ethiopians and People of Conscience No one benefits from war—least of all the kind of war Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed envisions for the Horn of Africa. This is not simply a war against Eritrea; it is a war against the entire region, waged on behalf of forces that profit from our destruction. Abiy has made himself their willing agent. I urge all Ethiopians to condemn his reckless agenda. Of course, there will be his loyal cadres—nameless, faceless propagandists who hide behind pen names to antagonize and divide. But we must not give them a platform. What matters is the truth: if war breaks out, this time there will be no borders. This is exactly what the TPLF once sought—to undermine Eritrea’s sovereignty, to march on Asmara, and to force regime change. Abiy is reviving that destructive playbook. Eritrea today is the only nation in the Horn standing firmly for regional stability. Those who wish to dominate our region, to control the Red Sea and dictate the fate of the Horn, do not want Eritrea’s independence or resilience to survive. Meanwhile, Ethiopia is being torn apart along ethnic lines—exactly the fragmentation such powers exploit. Our duty as people is clear: we must stop this madness. To “stop” means to stand openly against Abiy’s warmongering, to tell him—loudly and without hesitation—that we will stand with the people of Eritrea against his aggression. It means organizing to physically block his efforts to plunge the region into chaos. This is how the people of Ethiopia can finally reclaim their destiny. Already, there are signs of resistance along the borders with Eritrea. These sparks must be fanned into a collective movement. We must raise our voices, let the world hear us, and make Abiy Ahmed understand: his unprovoked aggression is unacceptable. It violates human decency, international law, and the basic principles of peace. It is the worst kind of anarchy, dragging humanity toward the abyss. And let me be clear: I am not being an alarmist, but a realist. Abiy Ahmed has concluded that the only way he can cling to power is by ruling under emergency decrees—through perpetual martial law. But this is futile. Ethiopia has cycled through this before, and this time the consequences will be final. By pushing neighboring countries, he has guaranteed they will push back. Egypt is ready. Somalia is restless. Sudan is angered. Eritrea is steadfast. If Abiy takes this reckless adventure, Ethiopia’s collapse will be imminent—and irreversible. We must not let it happen. The Horn should not burn for Abiy’s power.

For centuries, Ethiopia has been assaulted through Eritrea—by the Ottomans, the British, the Italians, the Egyptians. This is a painful history that informs the present. The war now has started & Ethiopia is encircled & being attacked. It is acting in self-defense. This is not a war against the Eritrean people, who have nothing to gain by standing against Ethiopia except death and destruction. They are being sold and used as pawns by their own leader. I agree war right now is not the best option. For Ethiopia a wiser strategy might have been to postpone, to prepare for a definitive victory that ensures lasting peace. But the decision was made for immediate political gain, to consolidate power at home. And so, the people are left to suffer the consequences.
