19 years ago, a high school basketball coach put his team manager into a game for the final four minutes. The kid had never played a single minute of competitive basketball in his life. He scored 20 points. Jason McElwain was diagnosed with severe autism at age two. He didn’t speak until he was five. He couldn’t chew solid food until he was six. He wore a nappy for most of his early childhood. As a baby, he was rigid, wouldn’t make eye contact, and hid in corners away from other children. He tried out for his school basketball team every year and got cut every time. Too small. Too slight. Barely 5’6 and about 54 kilograms. But he loved the game so much that his mum called the school and asked if there was any way he could be involved. The coach created a team manager role for him. For three years, McElwain showed up to every practice and every game. He wore a shirt and tie on match days. He ran drills, handed out water, kept stats, and cheered every basket like he’d scored it himself. On 15 February 2006, the last home game of his final school year, the coach let him suit up in a proper jersey and sit on the bench. With four minutes left and a comfortable lead, the coach sent him in. His first shot missed. His second missed. Then something shifted. He hit a three-pointer. Then another. Then another. His teammates stopped shooting entirely and just kept passing him the ball. He hit six three-pointers and a two-pointer. 20 points in four minutes. The highest scorer in the game. When the final buzzer went, the entire crowd rushed the court and lifted him onto their shoulders. His mum tapped the coach on the shoulder, in tears. “This is the nicest gift you could have ever given my son.” McElwain won the ESPY Award for Best Moment in Sports that year, beating out some of the biggest names in professional sport. He’s 36 now. He works at a local supermarket, coaches basketball, has run 17 marathons including five Boston Marathons, and travels the country speaking about never giving up. When asked about that night, his coach still gets emotional. “For him to come in and seize the moment like he did was certainly more than I ever expected. I was an emotional wreck.”

@Frank_Frangie This is nonsense. ABS doesnt call it where he catches it. It was a ball. This is modern society right now, rather go with what we feel is correct than what is actually correct.

For baseball nerds like me, this is the problem I have with the ABS system coming to MLB. It was a strike when it crossed the plate. And was correctly called. But by time catcher caught it, looked low. ABS challenge system will call it a ball. I say let the umps call it. FWIW.

Imagine a long line-up at Tim Horton's. Now imagine pulling an employee to a line just serving people willing to pay an extra $50 for a coffee. First, a lot of people can't afford the premium line. 👇👇👇 Second, the line with regular customers is served more slowly. Third, the employees will migrate to the line serving the $50-paying customers. Health care is just like this analogy. As an ER doctor it would be unconscionable I go to the waiting room and ask people waiting 10 hours who would want to pay me $500 to jump to the front of the line. And yet that is what we are talking about. @ianhanomansing cbc.ca/radio/checkup/…

@TorontoHydro convenient that magically the power came back on at exactly midnight. You cost me thousands of dollars in business. I get 52 Saturdays in a year and you ruined this one. Where is the accountability?

Gonna be an asterisk next that Superbowl because it's the first one where only one team played.

Starting to get irresponsibly high on Kazuma Okamoto The transition to MLB is tough, but a guy who’s money for a high .800 OPS every year in Japan with real pop? I just don’t see him falling off Guy is going to eat 🔥

@FAN590 get this idiot @joshgrahamshow off the air. What kind of idiot says American players ask for trades, but players from other countries don't because even small markets are "better than wherever they came from" Arrogant uninformed garbage.

Why is it so important the fan reaction Mitch Marner will get tonight? The Core-4 couldn’t get it done in the playoffs and had to be disbanded. Mitch’s contract was the first to expire. So, he wisely left for a different opportunity. Did you honestly want the #Leafs to stick with the same losing foursome for a tenth consecutive year? That makes no sense. #LeafsForever #GoldenKnights

@ThatsAShame9 @DameryDerek @JohnnyGiunta_ I think Bo at 200mil is more valuable than Tucker at 400mil. Pretty simple. Bo's RISP numbers are incredible. Tuckers stats dont blow me away and don't scream 300 mil even tbh. What am I missing?

@DameryDerek @JohnnyGiunta_ Amen to that. Cling to these players cause they like them instead of moving on & trying to better the team. The whining over getting rid of players like Goins back in the day.🙄 I mean if No comes back fine but give me Tucker any day.

It’s hard for people to grasp the fact that I still think Bo Bichette is really good however Kyle Tucker is a left handed bat that makes this team insanely good. Both options make the team better but the talk like Kyle Tucker is some bum is infuriating

Wow @WasteManagement first 2 no shows on pick-up, then half the load is still in thr bin and the driver drops the bin half on a snowbank, one wheel in the air, the other pinning full garbage bags to the ground. Genius level work. Happy new year.
