@busdurrr @GaussReprise If you're paying dues you are active, though. You're funding the organization, which is about the most important impact you could have.

Okay can anyone explain to me why GW and SMC act like the term "paper member" is a slur and not just a descriptor of someone not actively engaged in an organization

@Quirknky This makes sense to me but I think is more a case of people talking past each other. I don't recall anyone referring to clearly active members as paper members on the basis of general body meeting attendance.

This means the term 'paper member' is often being applied to people who canvass, phonebank, attend events, organize their workplaces etc etc, who just don't make it to general meetings. And in that context, that does make it seem kind of derogatory to describe them that way.

Good faith attempt at explaining: because when it is argued that 'paper members' shouldn't get to vote, we are usually in practice referring to different kinds of active members-someone who is completely unengaged from DSA is not going to vote in an election anyway by definition.

@busdurrr @spencerforhire Sometimes its just easier to go to a meeting you think would be interesting. Could be a canvas or could be a reading group. So long as you're a little familiar with Robert's Rules it should be easy enough to follow along. The real key is getting to know people imo

@spencerforhire @GaussReprise This is not necessarily true. I feel like I’m functionally a paper member because I have only been to a couple DSA events in the 8 years of me paying dues. (I know I should be more engaged; hoping to this year but I’ve missed all the recent member 101s for work)

If convention isn't letting members decide, then has DSA ever actually been democratic? If not, then what are we all doing here?

@fxrmaIine @LeftyWinter Convention delegates are selected via ranked choice voting by their chapters and are accordingly proportionately representative (with a small margin of error). It is the highest decision making assembly in DSA and always has been. I don't see how it's at all similar to the EC

@StatisticUrban @VKlker @LinkofSunshine Part of the difficulty here is that there's a common intuition that DSA's inactive paper member layer are normie progressives in contrast to the wacko activists, but since inactive members don't turn out for things by definition it's functionally unfalsifiable.

@StatisticUrban @VKlker @LinkofSunshine I don't run in to self identifying MLs very often, but in my experience the median DSA member tends to at least pay lip service to Marxism. I don't know anyone in my chapter who would describe themselves as a liberal.

@politigaymer @nycDSA There was an NPC meeting yesterday where they were going to vote on a series of resolutions hammering out more specific details and it turned in a standoff on factional lines over concerns related to A) when we would endorse a presidential candidate and B) How to conduct a poll

@politigaymer @nycDSA As for the AOC endorsement stuff, it's debates about the proper interpretation of a resolution from last convention about running someone for president and how to conduct the poll of members in that resolution.

Hey @nycDSA can we have a DSA 102 where you explain the factions in the national org and what they're constantly fighting and politicking over?

The NYC-DSA cochair talking this way about a 15-8 NPC vote about a non-binding poll, which maintained chapter-level referendums on the same topic, is so so disappointing. I know things have gotten heated, but this is not the way to talk about decisions you disagree with.
Gustavo@unionGustavo

DSA’s national leadership (the NPC) just voted to overturn our convention & took away rank and file members’ right to vote in an all-member poll on presidential endorsement. The NPC taking away our members’ right to vote while NYC-DSA members send them ~ $2M per year in dues.

It is very funny that many DSA in person meetings start with statements like “Assume good faith from your comrades” and then we never, ever do that online. Digital deliberation cannot replace the in person meeting no matter how convenient it would be.

I don't want to spend another 24 hours in the ER so I'm going to either cut off social media or pray that everyone manages to be normal about the NPC vote from today
