Your mother is problematic. Your father is problematic. Your son is problematic. Your aunt is problematic. The cashier at the local Tesco is problematic. You've probably bought a cookie from a bakery made by hands that have done unspeakable things. Every chocolate bar you've ever eaten has probably killed a 7 year old child slave in Cameroon. The gas that drives your car is fueled by engines of death. Every person who has ever smiled at you in the streets has committed some act that if you knew about it, would make you profoundly dislike them.
We have all been bad, small, petty, unlikeable, cruel, downright mean. Authors are not special "problematic" beings, they're just more public. Part of being an adult is recognizing that without mercy for our fellow human beings, and ourselves, we'd all be condemned to death. Reading fiction should help us understand that we're all irreparably tainted with evil, every system is corrupted, every line is broken.
And like, that's okay. That's what it means to be alive.

honestly i'm this close to quitting reading for good. every single author i actually love turns out to be problematic or worse. i'm so tired of finding out after i already got attached. feels like i can't enjoy anything anymore without a background check first

@hostileworm It is not a "morally correct decision". Vegans refuse to understand that humans are part of the circle of life. Death and life can never be separated. Many animals die and ecosystems are destroyed in producing food for vegans. They just close their eyes to it.

i would never argue with a vegan because they’re making the morally correct decision and i’m not. i don’t have any truly sound way to counter their perspective from a moral standpoint. so i just practice cognitive dissonance and eat my beef and pork and keep my mouth shut.

veganism is not inherently a morally superior position. the vegetables and fruits you consume are also harvested via immense cruelty & exploitation, not to even mention indigenous practices or food deserts. if you care about animals, the position to take is anti-capitalism.

@ogc2025 Again, the reason that our agricultural system operates in such an unsustainable way in the first place is because of capitalism. Individual choice will never be sufficient to alter our relationship to the environment. we need structural and systemic change.

@mechabowser I've noted before how being Mexican and vegan is probably hell on account of how many of the staples have meat prominently integrated into the recipe. That doesn't mean I'm excused from the moral calculus here, but I am self-admittedly too lazy to follow through.

Sowas wie nonverbale Kommunikation, intimität und romantik bei der man einfach in fahrt kommt ist nicht? Genau das würde so ein Gesetz bedeuten.

Meat eaters are so stupid... Animals don't have B12 , they get it supplemented and then we eat them. Instead of doing that, just supplement it yourself. Any other nutrient you can get vegan or isn't necessary (not necessarily in the list you gave)
