3. Shipbuilding is just the beginning. Milling steel, bending metal, building ships is putting heavy back into American industry. It may cost more initially but providing for the common defense is the primary mission of our government.

Twenty years after I took a negotiations class, the 3 class members who were by far the best negotiators in our mock case studies have had the least impressive careers. Need to leave room for the other guy to win a too or they won’t want to do business with you again.

I’ve been flooded with questions about the most ambitious new shipyard project in America, shockingly located near San Francisco. I didn’t have answers so the @gCaptain team flew to California. Here’s my interview with California Forver’s @jansramek & @NextNavy ⬇️

Howard Lutnick's investment bank Cantor Fitzgerald is offering to buy the right to businesses tariff refunds, basically betting that the courts will overturn the tariffs.

Few of them realize it, but people who say "I don’t think that we should have billionaires" are also saying "I don't think there should be startups," because successful startups inevitably produce billionaires. paulgraham.com/richnow.html

If you’re a gene editing scientist or comp bio/ML engineer interested in the topic of embryo editing, I’m hosting a dinner in the bay area soon with a few folks. I think the time is right for the defining company in the US to be built in this area, approaching it in a scientifically rigorous way, solving an unmet need. About 400m people live with a genetic disease today, and this technology can have a huge impact on human health if done correctly. I'm looking to invest in the right founding team if it comes together. Please reach out if you’re a scientist or engineer with an interest in this space. It should be a good discussion. (Application form in follow on post. Will pay for flight/hotel if needed.)

Q: "Are you considering tariff relief for small businesses?" Trump: "Why do you always mention, you know, a couple of little businesses. What about the car business?"

Thousands, and then millions, of American small businesses, including many iconic brands, will go bankrupt this year if the tariff policies on China don’t change. 🧵

Boeing is now cancelled in China. The great decoupling begins. Or so it seems. The reality is that Boeing’s planes that are manufactured in America, for Americans, include about 10,000 Chinese made parts. In each plane. In China, they use American made avionics and engines in their planes. Pretty important parts. The trade war shows a stunning misunderstanding of how global supply chains work. While it’s theoretically possible to decouple, trade is also a major driver of peace. I prefer incentives for peace. Just sayin’.

I created this list of background resources for @Flexport so everyone on our team become an expert on the new tariffs so we can best help our customers navigate this crisis. Sharing here to since many customers follow me. If you have other great articles and sources, please post in replies.

On April 17th the U.S. Trade Representative's office is expected to impose fees of up to $1.5M per port call for ships made in China and for $500k to $1M if the ocean carrier owns a single ship made in China or even has one on order from a Chinese shipyard. 🧵 1/

Getting a lot of questions on this: To qualify under USMCA, a car must be: – 75% made in North America (by value) – 75% of core parts (like engines, axles) also NA-made – 70% of steel & aluminum from NA – 40–45% made by workers earning $16+/hr Less than that? No USMCA. Tariffs apply.

@Holden_Culotta That’s because in the 80s we decided that everybody needed to go to college and we downplayed the value of a career in trades. Now we have a bunch of unemployable college grads and not enough skilled trades to meet demand.
