Time for a quick re-introduction. I’m Jamie. I’m 35 (well, very nearly 36), married, and a dad to two young daughters (4.5 and 20 months). When I’m not spending time with them, my passions are sport, investing, and tech. Here’s where I am right now and where I'm heading: On the professional side, I’ve co-founded a tech startup where I act as Technical Director. Alongside that, my goal is to build a side business right here on X and YouTube, sharing deep dives, portfolio updates, and investing content. But behind the scenes, I’m still balancing the 9-5 corporate grind. 😩 😩 😩 I’m currently in a senior tech role in the UK earning good money, but corporate life just gives me the ick. I’m completely sick of the fakeness and pretending to care about things that don't actually matter. I want complete control over my own time and earning potential. I actually got offered voluntary redundancy in 2024, but reluctantly had to stay because I didn't have a solid business plan ready. This time is different. I’m actively seeking redundancy, and the payout will give me a solid 12-18 months of runway to go "all in" on the startup and content creation. I’d love to know your story. What’s your perspective on the 9-5 vs. building your own business?

@FynnCapital When I was 18-24 I was travelling, pissing up, fucking as much as possible, into cars, living the dream. If I die tomorrow I’ve had an amazing life. Money can always be earned, but you can never buy your youth back. Live a little before you start investing

The average 18-24 year old in the UK has £2,699 in savings. I'm 20 and I've got £51,000 invested, and that's not even counting the cash sat alongside it. Not a flex. A reminder that "normal" for your age isn't the same as "enough."

There seems to be a ongoing debate in UK 🇬🇧 Is a 25-year mortgage actually "ownership," or just renting from the bank instead of a landlord?

@2147mill I’m self employed (ltd coy owner director) with mortgage and dependents, and have 3 months set aside. That’s enough to find work via any old job in an emergency and start getting paid in time. I don’t see the reason for having more than 3 months regardless of your situation

Your emergency fund size depends on your life. Renting with no kids? 3 months. Mortgage + dependants? 6 months. Self-employed? 9-12 months. The generic "3 month" rule was written for someone else's life. Build yours around yours.
