@EsotericCD Having control over the principality of Orange (in southern France) actually allowed him to carry the title of Prince, which was a huge boon as it made him the only Prince in the Low Countries. The status that provided allowed him some authority to lead the fight against Spain.

Aside from the many other titles held by William the Silent, Duke of Orange, he gained the title of the Lord of Cuyck through his marriage to his wife.

@HuskerAllen What sad news. I remember him mostly as a kind and caring person who I am happy to have met and worked with.

I'm sad to learn about the passing of Dave Jackson. He pushed seismologists to formulate testable predictions. Vague statements about a future large earthquakes were not acceptable. My last paper was largely inspired by my time with him at UCLA. heritageproject.caltech.edu/interviews-upd…
