The detectives walked toward the platform stairs, where they encountered an injured civilian victim and then the suspect, 44-year-old Anthony Griffin, who was ascending the staircase while brandishing a machete in his right hand. Detective Giuffre repeatedly ordered Griffin to drop the weapon. Griffin refused and descended the staircase back onto the train platform. The detectives followed him and again confronted him on the platform. They continued to order Griffin to drop the machete, but he kept brandishing the weapon in his right hand, shouting erratically, and moving back and forth toward and away from them. Griffin then advanced toward Detective Giuffre with the machete still in his right hand and the blade facing outward. Detective Giuffre discharged two rounds from his service firearm, striking Griffin. Griffin was taken into custody and transported via ambulance to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced dead. The investigation later revealed that prior to the confrontation with the detectives, Griffin had slashed three civilian victims with the machete, causing serious physical injuries.
