Argentina are the first team in the last 60 years without a single shot in the first 90 minutes of a World Cup final.

.@vali_nasr: "But Iran had been expecting war. It may have resumed sooner than anticipated, but Tehran sees advantage in that: if war is inevitable, Iran is better off waging it before the US has had time to regroup fully, and the global economy has had time to recover from energy and supply chain shocks." ft.com/content/22fdb2…

The US-Iran conflict is expanding beyond the Gulf. I asked @vali_nasr the key question: Who blinks first? Here's his take:

Another blockade of Iran is doomed to fail - @BrettErickson28 "The new blockade of Iran would not erase the failure of the first campaign. It would repeat it under even less favorable conditions, at an even greater humanitarian cost, directly harming the very people Washington claims it wants to help." thehill.com/opinion/nation…

I write in @FT that Iran’s leaders suspected that the MoU was a temporary retreat by the US, intended to relieve pressure on the global economy and prepare for another round of war. Iran’s current rulers believe that any display of restraint will only invite further American pressure. To deter the US, and to compel it to negotiate in earnest for an end to the war and a broader nuclear deal that would give Tehran the security and economic relief it craves, they believe Iran has to be aggressive and escalate the conflict beyond what the US is prepared to countenance. The one point of leverage Iran is not prepared to part with is its claim to the Strait of Hormuz and its ability to control access to it. Losing dominance in the strait would leave Iran without any leverage in future negotiations. Iran’s leaders have decided that retaining control of the strait is essential to securing future wins at the negotiating table and ensuring that the US implements the deal rather than walking away from it. ft.com/content/22fdb2…

One of the best comments on France’s defeat against Spain.
SethOfficial@UTD_Seth001

🚨Zinedine Zidane was asked about France’s elimination from the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a 2–1 defeat to Spain. 🎙️ Reporter: “Zinedine, how would you sum up France’s performance tonight?” 🗣️ Zinedine Zidane: “This is a humiliation. With the talent France have, there is absolutely no excuse for going out like this. Spain wanted it more, fought harder and played with far greater intelligence. France simply weren’t good enough. I’m tired of hearing people talk about how much quality this squad has. Quality means nothing if you don’t show courage when it matters most. A World Cup semi-final is where legends step up—not where they disappear. Spain controlled the biggest moments because France allowed them to. They lost too many duels, gave the ball away far too easily and looked like a team waiting for one player to rescue them. That mentality is unacceptable. When you wear the France shirt, you represent an entire nation. Tonight, too many players failed that responsibility. There was no urgency, not enough character and nowhere near enough fight. Don’t blame bad luck. Don’t blame the referee. Don’t blame tactics. Look in the mirror. Spain deserved to reach the final because they were the better team. This defeat should hurt every single player because they let an incredible opportunity slip away. At this level, talent alone doesn’t win World Cups. Character does. Spain showed it tonight. France didn’t.”
