He brands himself “no more pointless wars” and then commits to indefinite military aid to Ukraine ($175 billion and counting), cuts off the only Jewish democracy in the Middle East, opposes any action against Iran, and stays silent on Sudan, Yemen, Syria, Xinjiang, Tigray, and the Taliban’s gender apartheid. He reserves the word “genocide,” the “moral test of our time” framing, and a named lobby boycott (AIPAC) for the one conflict involving the Jewish state, while half a dozen ongoing conflicts with higher body counts get zero attention. His centerpiece policy is a 5% annual tax on net worth above $1 billion, which he claims raises “over $4 trillion. It’s unconstitutional. Every single developed country that has tried this failed. He proposes a “Cost-of-Living Exemption” zeroing out federal income tax for working- and middle-class Americans but the bottom 50% of earners already pay 2.3% of federal income tax. The top 1% pays 46%. Which means he can’t do basic math and his plans include taxing the middle class. Substantially. The American Hospital Association estimates Medicare for all would push roughly half of US hospitals into operating losses. Rural Maine hospitals Calais, Millinocket, Houlton, Machias already run on private insurance cross-subsidies would all close down. Platner, who claims to represent rural Maine, is endorsing the policy most certain to shutter rural Maine’s healthcare infrastructure. A $15 minimum wage would kill 1.4 million jobs concentrated on the least-skilled. Institutional investors own 0.5% of US single-family stock and barely register in Maine. Maine prices rose 78% because of pandemic in-migration and local zoning the kind of board Platner himself chairs in Sullivan. Quebec’s universal daycare produced negative developmental outcomes. Tennessee’s universal pre-K put kids behind by sixth grade. Postal banking failed once already (1911–1966). Term limits increase lobbyist power. Maine has one billionaire and Platner wants to make sure you know that one billionaire is the reason everyone in Maine is suffering. 🤯🤯
