@cathyparkhong It’s an absurd requirement and they shouldn’t have denied her the award. Why are you being a cop?

I have respect for Dewitt’s work but for $175,000, I would figure out a way to access WiFi. The video requirement is also minimal. Now if she has a disability, that’s on wc to accommodate her. But if not, I’m not going to shed tears for a grown woman who made her decision.

US universities are like Saudi football clubs. They get the money, the superstars, but in the end who would pick New Haven, Cambridge Massachusetts, or Ithaca over Bologna, Salamanca, or Oxford?

@bartlebytaco @alicealeph0 Another way to put it is that they defined themselves in opposition to what was cool, but in a way that only made sense if you were steeped in slash sick of hegemonic cool.

@bartlebytaco @alicealeph0 It made sense in that context, and it provided delight in that context for people who registered or identified with those sets of oppositions. The structure of meaning doesn’t exist anymore. Williamsburg is a mess of designer stores and class towers.

@Tyler_A_Harper @ajbauer The NEH has been gutted, non-citizen students who say a word about Gaza end up in prison or deported, but this guy thinks the real crisis is all the woke. It’s always 2022 in his mind.

@ajbauer The position for well over a decade was “now is not the time to have these conversations because the humanities are vulnerable!” This can has been kicked down the road again and again and I just reject the idea that there is a bad time to tell the truth. But I take your point.

This is tiresome. I’m painfully clear throughout this article that this is not a referendum on the projects that are funded—many which are no doubt worthwhile—but about a billion-dollar nonprofit pushing the scholar-activist model at the expense of funding a wider range of work.

Putting on my Shakespeare Professor hat to say, loud and clear, that there is absolutely nothing objectionable about the work of the Borderlands Shakespeare collective; it’s a mix of academics and theater makers working across reception studies, PaR, and performance studies.

I’ve spent the last year working on a story about the Mellon Foundation, the mega-wealthy private nonprofit that has a monopoly on humanities funding in America. The article, about how Mellon has held the humanities hostage to its progressive political ideology, is out today. 🧵
The Atlantic@TheAtlantic

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has become the country’s preeminent funder of humanities research, @Tyler_A_Harper writes. Is it saving American arts and letters—or killing them? theatlantic.com/magazine/2026/…

Lmao girl you know every time you catch someone you’re beefing with on here in the street you just look away timidly and say nothing because everyone has mutuals and goes to the same bars and parties and it’s all fake moral preening
John Ganz@lionel_trolling

We shall fight them in the Village, we shall fight them on Canal Street, we shall fight them in the bars and the restaurants, we shall never surrender. And even if this island were subjugated and starving, then Brooklyn and the boroughs over the river would carry on the struggle

@engele @SpecialPuppy1 Completely false as they count saying Free Palestine as antisemitism. And hate crimes against Muslims are never documented.

@engele @SpecialPuppy1 In your previous post you said you “don’t recall a bunch of hate crimes after 9/11.” This chart proves that your recollection was incorrect. Admit you were wrong, that Muslim people faced hate crimes, and move on. Jesus.

@SpecialPuppy1 Prejudice is a far cry different that assault itself and not at all something to be equated or compared straight across. Jewish folks are the targets of significantly more hate crime than Muslims in the US.

@ZacharyBraiterm @adam_louis52328 This dude isn’t remotely interested in events and has no way of answering your question. He’s interested in a warmed over Levi-Straussian structuralism (sorry, “ontology” *cough cough*) that allows him to dissolve it all into an eternal set of oppositions.

I think the academy has some serious soul-searching to do to understand how imperial caliphatism came to be framed as “indigenous resistance.” And how Zionism was recast as “Nazi-like settler-colonialism,” while Arab nationalism and Islamism, with their explicit ideologies of conquest and racial or religious purity, were elevated as forms of “anti-colonial resistance.” None of this is common sense. It takes deliberate blind spots and twisted analogies to get there.
