@AustinBauwens Hanging this up feels like Jordan burning #23. Is the main reason you don’t want to pigeon hole the studio or you’re personally tired of it? What if I said I could bring you clients who want this style? Would you do it?

“Resolve” - All #AfterEffects and #AdobeIllustrator in ~7 hours.
I felt like I never properly put a cap on my original series of short animations / “loops.” The past few years have been insanely enlightening for me, from a creative standpoint, and considering these are the...

@c_valenzuelab Yes. However, for many years anyone could make music at a high level with little learning curve. But 99% is crap. You still need Dre to make it good (for example). The human component will remain needed. The question is how much. The bar will rise along with the technology.

@hunterhammonds You’re an inspiration! Working on something in a similar vein and hope to share with you. Keep rocking!!

We've launched 5 productized services in 5 months.
Today we're at mid 7-figures in ARR and growing quickly.
We've invested $0 and raised $0. We've been profitable from day 1.
Here's a behind the scenes of our journey so far 👇
Building Creator Led Businesses
I don't know shit about selling chocolate bars, but I know how to build services, SaaS, and sell to other companies.
We saw an opportunity to tap into niche verticals and partner with creators that have carved out a meaningful brand in that vertical.
It works like this... People want to thrive on YouTube. Ali is well-known for teaching thousands of people how to do that. We build a done-for-you service for YouTube. It instantly clicks for people.
We call this Product Audience Fit.
How do you know if you have PAF? You only need to go-to-market once to gather more leads than you could service in 6-months.
Everyone wants to know how we structure deals with creators. Guess what? I ain't telling.
But. There's 3 levers that seems to make sense.
1. Equity
2. Rev Share
3. Affiliate structure
Do with that what you will.
Launching Company #1 - Keyframe
We started Assembly in mid-May with the launch of Keyframe. Our goal was to start small and test our hypothesis. Could a creator drive meaningful leads to a service business through organic mentions?
Yes. It definitely works.
Launching Company #2 - ViralCuts
LTV: $23,171 and growing
I personally consider ViralCuts to be our first real business that we launched. Our team quietly recruited a dozen great animators in preparation for launch.
We felt fairly confident that we'd be able to service most of the demand. We were wrong. Within 24 hours of launch, we were drowning in leads. Our team took approximately 146 sales calls over 2 weeks.
We still have not dug ourselves out from the waitlist. 😅
Launching Company #3 - HeyFriends!
LTV: $24,729 and growing
I spend a lot of time thinking about vertical integration and how we can continue to stack unfair advantages in our services businesses. Building long-form video on top of our short-form infrastructure made total sense.
We started looking at YouTube and stumbled upon a huge opportunity. There are no done-for-you YouTube agencies.
We partnered with our friend Ali Abdaal to build one. It launched with 1 tweet from Ali. That led to over $2m/MRR in leads.
Product. Audience. Fit.
Launching Company #4 & 5 - Off Menu / Bitesized
Off Menu LTV: $61,499 and growing
Bitesized LTV: $15,430 and growing
We actually created Off Menu late in 2022 but never publicly announced it or prioritized customer acquisition. Our incredibly design team was simply too busy helping to build our new brands.
In June, we began recruiting the best design talent possible to prepare for a public launch for not one, but two agencies. It seemed obvious that we could maintain a premium-tier subscription agency with shorter retention cycles (2-4 months) and then funnel those customers to a "grow with you" subscription at a lower price point.
What We've Learned So Far
From Day 1 my belief was that a competitive moat would exist purely based on the execution-risk of these businesses. 5 months in, I feel more strongly about that than ever.
It's really difficult to operate these businesses at quality and scale, and have a healthy margin. Frankly, I don't think I'd be able to do it if I hadn't spent the past decade building agencies.
Waitlists are pointless. Most conversions after 30-45 days are quite low, like sub-20% low.
We're working to turn off our waitlist completely before end of the year and allow customers to onboard instantly. Obviously given our scale, this is quite difficult.
Project Management is a science. I'm confident we excel in this category, but that's due to a lot of experience and attention. We're always thinking about how to improve the customer experience.
Customer want multiple solutions. A large portion of our customer base purchases multiple services from us. Some customers even use all of our services.
What's Next
Based on projections, we've only grown our existing portfolio to roughly 15% it's true potential. We'll begin hiring GMs or CEOs for the businesses early next year.
There's a few more service businesses that we're building before moving into new verticals, but most of my time is spent thinking about what's next.
We built the launchpad. Now it's time to assemble the rocket.
If you've made it this far, I'm impressed. I'm going to be sharing more long-form breakdowns like the ones below, so we sure to give me a follow @hunterhammonds
- How we run each co
- Our process for customer experience
- How we choose companies
- My productivity stack
- Our culture of Calm Aggression
- How to scale from $10k/mo to $100k/mo

@produkhelt @FonsMans I’ve thought about this for years. Yes, nothing is binary. Many will still be specialist. Like in films, you need 3D people that just do fur. But for commercial applications 3D artists do everything from modeling to animation to fur. That wasn’t true just 2 years ago.
English

@GlifKevin @FonsMans Love it. Agreeing with others' opinions seems so easy. Sure, it’s a choice the designer can make, but one that’s often made for them.
Many super-good designers are good for one reason, focus. They became best by focusing on one thing within the design discipline.
English

@produkhelt @FonsMans Adobe is buying Figma. Spline is integrated with webflow. And a designer doesn’t have to use all tools. I agree with the Fons. The super good and efficient designer is going to take the jobs.
English

@FonsMans Curious as to why tho! Just think how many special tools we use today.
Figma, Bezel, Spline, Play, Adobe and and and... Do you think the big corporates will solve this issue as they have the buying power to eat the smaller?

@jstrelioff @Goodside_Studio Happy to chat if you think helpful. Built, ran, and ECD of Juniper Jones. Recently Exited / Aquired but interested in helping others.

Any small brand studios with an equal emphasis on strategy, messaging, and design want to have an open convo where we both share our project approach/process?
We're thinking through ways to improve our process @goodside_studio and would love to know how others do things!

Almost every person in your life will try to convince you to be less ambitious when you are young.
They will tell you to be realistic. They will tell you not to take too much risk.
This will come from family, friends, and mentors alike.
Don't listen to them. They are wrong.
Ambition is the gasoline needed to live an extraordinary life.
