One of our shared accommodation properties for women in York underwent a recent refurbishment. Alongside this, we are beginning to develop another 3-bed property supporting women, expanding our gender-responsive and trauma-informed offer in our York accommodation 🏠 As part of this we will be working alongside our team at the Women's Wellness Centre to enable more dedicated support and activities to those residing in the supported accommodation. We are also reviewing the support and work we do, now developing a 12-week floating support offer with the option to extend a further 4 weeks if this is required. The majority of people we support don't require a full year of floating support. Once people stabilise a routine and are able to sustain rent and utilities, and needs are met, we've seen engagement naturally declines. With 12 clear support sessions, the focus is on addressing people's immediate needs, which enables independence leading to a flourishing and fulfilling life. With this new work, we will be in a phase of evaluation to ensure that we are delivering the right support at the right time and will continue to assess our approach 💜 Learn more about the Women's Wellness Centre ➡️ bit.ly/3RrCs7F

It's key that the future Mayor of the North East commits to improving the picture for women with multiple unmet needs in our region 👇

Axeing homelessness services is a dangerous and short-sighted decision, but we estimate over 1,000 bed spaces are at risk through county council decommissioning proposals. Reporting from @Robert_Booth on an issue facing many of our members ⬇️ theguardian.com/society/2024/m…

Gary's Story 📖 Gary is 33 year old and has experienced homeless for many years. When Gary came to our Union Terrace accommodation, he consistently experienced issues paying his top up, and has been on the verge of being asked to leave throughout his stay for various reasons. At first, he doesn’t have any meaningful way to use his time and has minimal family support for such a young person. Gary doesn’t exhibit any major behavioural issues, but has struggled with his mental health and struggles to engage with resettlement. Gary has currently achieved the outcome of safe, stable accommodation after working with us to create a repayment plan, with the goal of an onward referral once his arrears are below £300 👏 Working with Gary has reinforced many valuable lessons for our team at Union Terrace. Close joint working with other tiers of housing services, as well as external agencies, help effectively prevent street homelessness. A huge lesson is to know the importance of giving chances and adapting rules and regulations to respond to learning. Giving multiple ‘second chances’ can be life-changing for an individual who has lost faith in services, and never giving up on someone sends a powerful message that anyone can change their life.
