Councillors in Devon will debate a motion proposed by the Greens to ban meat & dairy. The motion is virtue signalling and the council should instead focus on supporting local farmers who are the backbone of the local economy, environment, and rural communities. Share if you agree

Read below why, along with 99% of the UK population, I COULD NEVER GO VEGAN, and won’t be persuaded by the documentary of the same name. It would need a point by point rebuttal of all the logical fallacies, sweeping generalisations, cherry picking of stats, blatant ignorance, and general howlers to deal with all the errors in this documentary. (One example. Elephants are big and strong so a vegan diet must be healthy for humans.) But let me just deal with one at the start of the doc, the assertion that veganism is on the increase. Reality is that vegans account for around 1% of the population. This statistic has stayed constant for the last 30 years. It is deluded to say that this extreme diet is on the rise. Vegetarians, who eat dairy and eggs, only account for around 5% of the population. Flexitarians, that’s people who will tell a pollster that they might try a vegan food occasionally, make up no more than 15% of the population. In market terms, pioneers of fake meat, such as Beyond Meat, and other vegan alternatives, such as Quorn, are in dire straits financially. They are not delivering the anticipated profits for investors, and are either losing money or reporting sales declines. Why? The vast majority of people are rightly reluctant to abandon the nutrient-dense animal-source foods that the wet, green UK is great at producing: meat, dairy, eggs, and fish. These foods reflect the productive capacity of our land and waters. They have formed the backbone of the eating habits of diverse cultures and sustained human populations around the globe for two millennia. Many people who dabble with veganism soon give up. Those who adopt it longterm often encounter health issues. (Read Lierre Keith’s The Vegetarian Myth). This is not surprising. A vegan diet, unless accompanied by daily food supplements, cannot deliver all the micronutrients required to keep you healthy. A vegan diet will certainly leave you deficient in B12, retinol and vitamin D3, and most likely also K2, heme iron, and essential amino acids. The makers of the documentary seem entirely unaware that the theoretical nutrition to be had from plant foods is often hard for the body to absorb because these plant foods also contain anti-nutrients (lectins, phytates, oxalic acid), that make the desirable nutrients less bioavailable. It is irresponsible to recommend a vegan diet to gullible, well-intentioned, yet badly informed people without explaining that, in the absence of routine (expensive) supplementation, they may encounter future problems, such as the cessation of periods, increased likelihood of bone fractures, and more. There is a naivety to much of the argument in I COULD NEVER GO VEGAN, but I suspect also an element of deliberate bad faith and intellectual dishonesty. The makers of this doc have made no attempt to acknowledge that not all farmers use destructive industrial livestock rearing methods. Such hard working people of good faith who follow time-honoured farming methods and/or are developing regenerative livestock farming models, are simply written off and smeared via a generic critique that highlights worst case scenarios, often unfairly conflating the worst excesses of US industrial farming with the UK and the EU. I COULD NEVER GO VEGAN shows a worrying gullibility that somehow eating more fruit and vegetables, eliminating farm animals, indiscriminate re-wilding, and swallowing the techno-food monstrosities embraced by food-from-thin-air George Monbiot (Solar Foods) and Bill Gates (“Thermochemical, non-agricultural food”) will save the planet from imminent melt-down. Thankfully, the general public doesn’t buy the ‘eco-modernist’ food script and is not inclined to pay a rip-off premium for foul-tasting, techno-food concoctions masquerading as the real thing. We may not hero-worship all farmers but we do trust them to feed us over than the food fantasist tech bros and nutty professors.

Agree. It’s a very dire situation. But we need to discuss #geoengineering with farmers and producers across the U.K. Without us all looking at the evidence and understanding the ramifications, nothing will improve. We HAVE to come together. We are all under attack.

6 months of almost incessant rainfall is putting a huge strain on so many UK farmers as their fields are flooded. It’s a desperate situation for many of them and our food security is at risk. Farmers need our support more than ever. Video via @NFUtweets

‘So the question has to be asked, given the complexity of the current inventory system, its reliance on arbitrary “conversions” between greenhouse gases, different rules for different sectors and rules that either don’t reflect reality , state things that aren’t true or account for things that aren’t there, do the national inventories of greenhouse gases provide a suitable basis for target based climate policies such as we have?’ Short answer: No. @NadalineW explains how the current inventory system is failing farming and sabotaging genuine progress against climate change in this excellent book. Essential reading for farmers and anyone who cares about farming and the future of food. We’re currently compiling some Freedom of Information requests for @DefraGovUK and we have questions surrounding their accounts & their position on mRNA in agriculture. They should be receiving these tonight. No longer will we stay silent whilst they destroy food production.

A third of meat substitutes in the supermarket contained toxic compounds produced by moulds. Mostly soy, pea and lupin-based. Mould is a real world challenge in crop farming and storage. And it's not good for you to have a steady supply of mycotoxins in your diet - especially not good in products marketed as "healthier". There's always something new to learn in the world of food & nutrition!
Frédéric Leroy@fleroy1974

"More attention is needed from the regulatory side for policymakers to consider the legislations of mycotoxins in meat alternatives."

49% of British fruit and vegetable farmers feel they will go out of business in the next 12 months and 75% of people think supermarket behaviour is a leading factor. It’s time for governments to act and support & protect our farmers from unfair supermarket pricing.

Everyone objecting to any planning application that destroys wildlife should be quoting this paragraph first. But it all hinges on what anyone interprets as 'significant' harm. What counts as significant harm... and significant to whom?
Andrew Lipczynski 🇺🇦🕊@amjlip

🤔NPPF Para 186 a): When determining planning applications local authorities should apply following principles “if significant harm to biodiversity cannot be avoided, adequately mitigated or, as last resort, compensated for, then permission should be refused;”

Unelected globalist and WHO figurehead, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, declares war on meat and traditional agriculture, under the pretext of tackling "climate change": "Our food systems are harming the health of people and planet. Food systems contribute to over 30% of greenhouse gas emissions, and account for almost one third of the global burden of disease." "Transforming food systems is therefore essential, by shifting towards healthier, diversified and more plant based diets." Anyone remember electing this buffoon to decide what kind of agriculture and diets are permissible? Nope, me neither.
