À l’occasion de l’anniversaire de l’annexion, Ankara réaffirme son soutien à l’Ukraine et dénonce une violation du droit international. Le ministère turc des Affaires étrangères rappelle que l’annexion de la Crimée par la Russie, il y a 12 ans, a violé toutes les normes du droit international. Le référendum organisé en mars 2014 est considéré comme illégal par Ankara. Position officielle : La Turquie ne reconnaît pas la Crimée comme territoire russe. Ankara insiste aussi sur trois principes : • indépendance de l’Ukraine • souveraineté de l’Ukraine • intégrité territoriale de l’Ukraine La question de la Crimée reste également liée au sort des Tatars de Crimée, que la Turquie dit suivre de près. Rappel : Fin février 2014, des soldats sans insignes (les fameux “petits hommes verts”) prennent le contrôle des sites stratégiques de la péninsule. Quelques semaines plus tard, le 16 mars 2014, un référendum est organisé sous contrôle russe. Les Tatars de Crimée boycottent massivement ce vote. Malgré cela, le 21 mars, Vladimir Poutine signe la loi intégrant officiellement la Crimée et Sébastopol à la Russie. I’d pencil in some mild concern for around 2600 and see how things look then. Now. The refugees. Since someone asked who’s paying for all this. Let’s follow the money back a bit further. America invaded Afghanistan, spent 20 years there achieving absolutely nothing, then left in such breathtaking chaos that people were literally hanging off aircraft. It then invaded Iraq over weapons that turned out not to exist, killed somewhere between 150,000 and a million people, and converted a functioning country into a sectarian hellscape. This is before we even get to the drones over Yemen, Somalia and Pakistan. The people washing up on European shores are, in very large part, the direct human wreckage of American foreign policy. America created the disaster. Europe is housing the survivors. And America is on the internet asking why Europe keeps letting people in. Remarkable cheek, really. As for eliminating indigenous culture: the United States actually eliminated its indigenous people. Deliberately. With rifles and government paperwork. Europe took in Syrian doctors. These are not comparable situations, and pretending they are requires a truly heroic indifference to history. The culture is fine. France still has the cheese. The Louvre is still there. Bach is still there. Nothing has been eliminated except, apparently, the ability to read a percentage.

Senators from both parties say they have not heard a single coherent exit strategy in any briefing, classified or otherwise. Senator Mark Kelly put it plainly: "They didn't have a plan. They have no timeline. And because of that, they have no exit strategy." Senator Patty Murray emerged from a two-hour classified briefing and told the public the war plans were "incoherent and incomplete."

Europe told Trump and Vance, clearly and seriously, that Russia’s war against Ukraine and its hybrid warfare campaign across the continent represents the greatest security threat Europe has faced since 1945. Europe said this as a NATO ally. As a partner of seven decades. As a bloc that has housed American bases, funded American adventures, and sent its sons to die in American wars without much complaint. Trump and Vance looked at this and said: not our problem. It’s happening on your continent. We have important things to attend to. The important things turned out to be nothing. There were no important things. There was golf, there was television, and there was a remarkable amount of time spent being angry about things on the internet. Then, approximately some months later, the same administration announced it intended to seize Greenland. A sovereign territory. From a NATO ally. By force if necessary. So to summarise: defending Europe from an actively invading nuclear power is not America’s problem. Illegally annexing a Danish island in the Arctic is apparently a matter of urgent national interest. Now. If anyone in the MAGA universe is sitting there expecting Europe to provide diplomatic cover, logistical support, intelligence sharing, or a single sympathetic press release for whatever America is currently doing in the Middle East, I have some news for you. You told us you weren’t our allies. We were listening. You don’t get to turn the alliance on and off depending on which direction the aggression is pointing. That is not how it works.
