@Grummz The industry has replaced so many 'old straight white males' with diverse young people. And now they don't have the people with tons of experience and deep technical knowledge.

@x3notrope It's easy for France. There's no left/right divide on the issue, they all want the migrants to reach the UK, just for different reasons.

I don't understand why Britain is compelled to rescue people that the French are not compelled to rescue. They're departing from France and traversing French territorial waters across half the distance travelled yet the 'only' recourse is bring them to England. Doesn't make sense

@tedwrichards @SBarrettBar The problem is that we can't separate legitimate refugees from the hordes of fighting-age male benefits seekers/asylum abusers. If you're genuinely fleeing conflict, you don't abandon the women/children/elderly.

France does not get to decide whether or not we have a border. We do.

@Danjsalt @technopopulist Doesn't work in practice. If you try to physically obstruct a dinghy, migrants end up in the water, and then we're obliged to rescue them and then they become our problem forever.

@technopopulist Stopping boats entering British waters is not an infringement of their sovereignty if it was then they've been infringing in ours for years

France is going to unilaterally withdraw from the Le Touquet Agreement if Britain violates its national sovereignty. What this means is that illegal immigration will move back towards the Channel Tunnel (& ports) and will become far more effective. It will be clandestine, but in higher numbers, and it will involve far less media scrutiny because the optics are less obvious. We will be destroyed as a country with little public awareness of how this is happening. The EU will also sanction us and attempt to turn Britain into a leper economy, despite the damage this will cause them as well. They have made these decisions before regarding Russia.

@technopopulist We have ways to deal with anyone bringing migrants into the UK via tunnel or ferry. Heavy fines make the haulage companies take it seriously. May mean goods having to take more expensive routes to avoid the French problem areas.

@andrew_lilico No you sail into British waters and as a boat tries to go past into British waters you stop it - i’m not sure why we over complicate matters.

@1kylobeddo @SBarrettBar @JulieHntm0 The only solution is to remove the 'pull factors'. To make life somewhat unpleasant for lone male asylum abusers. Refugee camps in remote areas, not city centre hotels.

@1kylobeddo @SBarrettBar @JulieHntm0 The problem is that we're obliged to rescue anyone in distress at sea. And once we've rescued them, we can't get rid. So we can't physically obstruct the boats once they're heading our way - if the migrants jump into the water, we can't just let them drown

Problem is Steve, by telling the French that you are intending to send a British naval frigate into French territorial waters is unlawful under international laws. UK warships cannot lawfully carry out enforcement operations inside French territorial waters without France’s consent. Doing so would breach France’s sovereignty under international law. That’s all. I’m sorry to disappoint by pointing out the bleeding obvious.

I feel like the Arday scandal might be the start of something larger. A huge amount of academic “research” is just an endless exchange of essays for which we pay people a middle class salary. Much of this was already of dubious value (such as the work Arday plagiarised). With LLMs, it might be clear that it is of zero value. Why should it be funded at all?

@omid9 Yet when a mere few hundred angry men stormed the US Capitol, it was considered one of the darkest days in US history. Even when they all went home before the end of the day.
