Something I’ve never shared publicly before. Early in residency, I placed a “simple" suprapubic tube. It went fine. Then my patient died. I nearly walked away from surgery forever. These instruments are unusual. As explained in my 🧵 on gold-handled instruments (link on next page): The gold means they’re coated with tungsten carbide, which is harder steel. To ‘waste’ tungsten carbide on a Babcock, which is specifically meant to be gentle is…a choice. 😐
