Imagine rolling into a dark LZ with this setup: a UH-1 fitted with experimental twin M134 Miniguns, most likely a special "Lightship" configuration for night hunter-killer NAM missions. Btw, that's an absolutely terrifying amount of firepower. Combined, those guns could throw 8,000 to 12,000 rounds of 7.62×51mm NATO downrange every minute! Imagine... 🫠

The American war in Vietnam did not really begin with a grand invasion. It began with a confused series of events in the Gulf of Tonkin in the first week of August 1964, one battle that clearly happened and one that almost certainly did not. Start with the background, because it is the key to the whole thing. The US Navy ran electronic spy patrols along the North Vietnamese coast, code named DESOTO, to map the enemy's radar and defenses. At the same time, South Vietnamese commandos were carrying out hit and run raids on the North Vietnamese coast under an American planned program called OPLAN 34A. On the nights of July 30 and 31, those commandos shot up North Vietnamese island targets. The North Vietnamese were enraged and jumpy, and when they saw the destroyer USS Maddox cruising off their coast a couple of days later, they connected it to the raids. So on August 2, they came out after it. Three North Vietnamese torpedo boats of the 135th Torpedo Squadron bore down on the Maddox, commanded by Captain John Herrick. The Maddox fired warning shots and then fired for real, hurling more than 280 rounds, and four F-8 Crusader jets came screaming off the carrier Ticonderoga to strafe the attackers. When the smoke cleared, all three torpedo boats were shot up, four North Vietnamese sailors were dead, and the Maddox had been hit by exactly one machine gun bullet. No American was hurt. That battle was entirely real, and it was a lopsided American win. Then came the night that changed history, and it may never have happened at all. Two nights later, on August 4, the Maddox and a second destroyer, the Turner Joy, were back in the Gulf in foul weather, a dark and stormy sea. The sonar and radar screens lit up with what the crews read as torpedo boats and incoming torpedoes, and the destroyers began firing wildly into the night, reporting attack after attack over the radio. But almost from the start the story fell apart. Overhead, a Navy pilot named James Stockdale, who would later become a famous prisoner of war and Medal of Honor recipient, flew low over the water the entire time, looking for the enemy boats, and he saw nothing. He said later he had the best seat in the house and there was nothing there but black water and American gunfire, that our boys were shooting at ghosts. Captain Herrick himself grew doubtful within hours. He sent a message warning that the whole engagement was suspect, that freak weather effects and an over eager young sonar operator probably accounted for the reports, and that a complete evaluation should be done before any action was taken. He flatly cabled that many of the reported contacts and torpedoes appeared doubtful. In other words, the man on the scene told Washington the second attack might not have been real. It did not matter. President Johnson wanted to look strong in an election year and had a retaliation ready to go. He went on television and told the country the North Vietnamese had launched a second unprovoked attack on American ships in international waters. He ordered airstrikes against North Vietnam, Operation Pierce Arrow, and in a bitter irony James Stockdale, who knew there had been no boats, was sent to fly one of the retaliatory raids for an attack he had personally watched not happen. Then Johnson took a resolution to Congress. On August 7, the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution passed the House unanimously and the Senate 88 to 2, handing the President a nearly unlimited authority to wage war in Vietnam without ever declaring one. Only two senators voted no, Wayne Morse of Oregon and Ernest Gruening of Alaska, and Morse warned that history would not forgive them for what they were doing. He was largely ignored. Everything came through that door. Within months the bombing of the North began in earnest, and within a year the ground war and half a million American troops. And here is the postscript that poisoned the whole thing. Decades later, in 2005, the National Security Agency declassified its own internal studies of the incident, and the conclusion was damning. There had been no North Vietnamese attack on August 4. The intelligence had been misread and, in places, shaped to fit the story Washington wanted. A war that would kill more than 58,000 Americans and vastly more Vietnamese had been authorized, in large part, on the strength of a battle that never took place. It helped open what people came to call the credibility gap, the growing gulf between what the government said about Vietnam and what was actually true, and the country never fully trusted its leaders on the war again.

A 2016 West Point graduate who also competed on the Academy’s powerlifting team, she was among the first ten women to finish Army Ranger School. She then took command of an infantry rifle platoon in the 82nd Airborne Division before successfully competing for a slot in the elite 75th Ranger Regiment, becoming the first female infantry officer in the storied unit. In 2019 she deployed to Afghanistan at the head of a Ranger platoon, marking another milestone as the first woman to hold a combat leadership role for the unit. She has spoken openly about the reality of that experience, the heavy scrutiny and the challenge of earning acceptance from some members of her own team. Her journey began with a defining moment at West Point, when she chose honesty about a rule violation over concealment, resulting in a 3 year separation before she returned, by then to an Army that had opened the infantry to women. This is an example of someone who has extreme confidence and is also an absolute moron. One, she’s about as beautiful as a bag full of buttholes. Two, you do CPR on a patient that went pulseless for a medical reason, not for a trauma patient that is bleeding out… This is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard on this app or anywhere else for that matter. TCCC, and specifically MARCH protocols, does not have CPR anywhere in the algorithm because it is not applicable to trauma patients, especially when we are talking about hemodynamically unstable patients. This is basic, basic medicine. This person is disgustingly fat (which shows a complete lack of self control and discipline) and clearly stupid about medical protocols despite claiming to be a nurse. Anyone that follows her is asking for the dumbest possible take.
