@TracyWesterman This conflates correlation with causation. All we can really say right now is that the educated are less likely to feel aggrieved - it tells us nothing about whether the causes of grievance could be addressed by “reading more”. Your prescription is just to “let them eat cake”.

There is now substantial research — both in Australia and the United States — on who engages with political detail and how that shapes voting behaviour. The findings are striking and consistent across both countries. In the 2024 US presidential election, pre-election polls found Americans who consumed no political news at all said they’d vote for Trump over Kamala Harris by a whopping 20-point margin — 60% to 40%. The more engaged they were in politics — the more likely they were to support Harris. Data for Progress found that support for Harris decreased as a voter’s news consumption decreased. In other words: the more people knew, the less likely they were to vote for Trump. The Australian data tells the same story. Australian Election Study research found that Greens voters decided their vote disproportionately on the basis of policy issues, while Liberal voters were more likely to decide based on whether they liked party leaders or the party brand as a whole. One Nation voters were found to have the lowest institutional trust of any party’s supporters — consistent with international research on the rise of socially conservative populist movements. Australian research also found that voters with negative economic expectations are significantly more likely to support minor parties — and this association has strengthened since the mid-2010s. ANU research on political knowledge found that consumption of political information online is narrowing among a younger, better educated and politically interested group — meaning the internet is reinforcing the advantages of the most knowledgeable while increasingly failing to draw in the most politically disengaged. This connects to something deeper and more disturbing. Belief in conspiracy theories has increased dramatically over the last decade — and the research is unambiguous about why. A study published in Nature Human Behaviour across 26 countries found that conspiracy thinking is significantly more prevalent at the extreme right of the political spectrum, strongest among supporters of populist parties not in government, and amplified by feelings of political powerlessness and low institutional trust. Multiple peer-reviewed studies confirm that right-wing populist politicians don’t just attract conspiracy believers — they actively cultivate them. Research found that populist radical right parties deliberately use conspiracy rhetoric to frame politics as corrupt elites against ordinary people — a simple story that requires no engagement with evidence and is nearly immune to facts. Trump’s “fake news” rhetoric accelerated this dramatically. By systematically attacking credible institutions — media, science, courts, electoral systems — he created a permission structure for dismissing any inconvenient fact as manufactured. The result is cult-based politics: a closed information loop where the leader is the only trusted source, where evidence is irrelevant, and where loyalty replaces analysis. Australia is not immune. The same pattern — institutional distrust, grievance, simple explanations for complex problems — is the entire operating model of One Nation. Populism — whether Trumpism in the US or Hansonism in Australia — is not a coincidence. It is specifically engineered for low-engagement, high-grievance voters. Simple slogans. Single scapegoats. No policy detail. No accountability. The moment you examine the actual voting record, the actual economic data, the actual legislative outcomes — the whole platform collapses. This is why detail matters. This is why the threads I’ve been posting matter. Engagement is the antidote. Which is exactly why the people who profit from grievance work so hard to keep it simple.

@AryaTayebi The upcoming Avatar and Tokon games seem squarely focused on “fun”. Invincible too, although that’s a bit more on the sweaty side of fun. I hope all of them do well at launch. The one risk of Tokon is that it feels like the kind of game that should be in arcades.

I think we've lost the plot a bit with fighting games. Balance, systems, competitive depth, all of that gets dissected to death, but what about...is it fun? Feels like that isn't the top priority anymore.

@Its_Fenni Everyone is advising on butter, so let me give you three more options: * Salt crackers (Savoy/Jatz in Aus but I’m not sure what you have in USA), Vegemite topped with a thick slice of cheddar or tasty cheese * Grilled Vegemite and cheese * Vegemite and cheese scroll

@wtfbarney1010 @AlboMP The truth is that there's probably a middle ground here. If I've worked at Woolies for 4 years, I'm probably worth full award wages at 18 - but if I'm a newbie, I would gladly take less pay for a job and work experience. Perhaps an opt-in system, or one based on years worked?

@AlboMP You’re only going to price young and inexperienced people out of the job market making it harder for them to be employed Why would a supermarket or fast food place hire an inexperienced 18 year old when they can just hire the 25 year old that comes with references?

@ajsaeedy Everyone who complains about the manosphere should be asked to provide examples of positive masculinity and where boys can find it today. Note: it can’t be gender-neutral stuff like just being nice, etc.; it has to be positive *masculinity*. Can they do that?

SCOOP: Sheryl Sandberg is leaning back in. The billionaire behind the feminist foundation Lean In has shed about a quarter of its staff and hired a 25 year old as its CEO, with Sandberg hoping to push back against the “tradwife” and manosphere movements. Bridget Griswold, Lean In's new CEO, graduated from Brown University in 2023 and worked at Meta for two years before taking the top job at Lean In. Her rapid ascent—and lack of nonprofit experience—have led some staff to leave. Sandberg is concerned that the “glamorization” of the “tradwife” movement risks reviving the professional guilt women spent decades dismantling. The hope is that a new fresh face and tighter workforce at Lean In will help push against that. Read more about the shake-up inside Lean In in my story with @EmilyGlazer in the link below...

@kevinbonham @Spandex_Pod It’s a fantasy narrative, plain and simple. People had concerns about the Voice which sat quite outside of ordinary political barracking.

I don't like that expression! Come on, there was so much concern about the Voice rising on the right even before the decision that if the Coalition had backed it many people on the right would have said "why are the Coalition backing this instead of opposing it?" There would never have been Coalition unity on backing or anything near it.

@jchensor @KyokujiFGC I think that only becomes a problem at Low Master ranks tbh, but I agree. I understand that DR adds massive strategic depth but as a relative beginner I don’t like it because it is a very frame-knowledge heavy tool.

@GuruJation @KyokujiFGC I will say, though, that Drive Rush isn’t as well balanced. DIs work well because the risk is very high. Getting counter DIed HURTS. But for raw Drive Rushes, it’s not balanced. The checker can’t do nearly as much damage as the Drive Rusher. They need to reward checking DRs more.

This was one of those moments where I felt like a game producer (Michael Murray) accidentally said the quiet part out loud. If your competitive game isn't "skewed towards higher level players" then what you have is a glorified party game. Explains a lot about the state of T8.

@jchensor @KyokujiFGC This is why I feel SF6 is kind of genius design in how it integrates Drive mechanics. DI is strong at low levels and weak but relevant at high levels; PP and DR are rare at low levels and essential in pro play. It’s an amazing, seamless transition.

@KyokujiFGC And that’s really really hard to do. But when you make a Fighting Game, you HAVE to think very carefully about that when you’re designing the game. But of course, that depends on the goal of your game. If your goal is to make a party game or a niche difficult game, that’s fine.

@comical_engr Hold your horses. One Nation will pick up up 2-4 seats with an outside chance of 5. Labor/Green combined is over 50% in many seats, which is why they have done so well. ONP polled very well in ALP seats, which boosts overall vote but hasn’t helped them win seats.

The Australian electoral system is broken. How can OneNation be second in the overall SA vote and get no seats in the lower house. It is interesting that the combined coalition / OneNation vote exceeded Labor. So well done for not preferencing each other!!

@ProfJoannaHowe Let people vote in peace. Whatever your views are, there’s a time and place to express them, at the polling booth is not it. Voting can be stressful enough for people, the last thing they need is an activist creating a commotion.

@ThePlazmatic @leafar_bs @Bri4nF Two observations: 1) As a casual player, I prefer the slow pace of change. Re-learning too much all the time is dispiriting. 2) As a spectator, even small changes appear to have major impacts on the meta. They just take time to be fully explored. I think Capcom has it right.

@leafar_bs @Bri4nF It's not bad, most of the changes are actually solid and make sense, some fun new tools for certain characters and making some annoying moves less annoying. The problem is we want these kinds of updates more often instead of once per year-ish. The game feels stale.

After sleeping on it I would downgrade this to "ok patch". Something I'd expect to tidy up after major balance change. The changes themselves seem solid but the scope/rate of updates for all of SF6's lifetime has been pretty abysmal. Speed up cadence if this is the approach.
Brian_F@Bri4nF

Good patch. Smart change to overheads, sensible buffs/nerfs, fun new toys for a lot of the cast. Only critique is for being one of the only patches we get a year it still feels a little underwhelming. If we got this scale of changes a bit faster I would be 100% satisfied. 7/10

@AntiCommieBecca @UndeadDan @HPluckrose OK, but do you believe you have the right to stop your husband from watching sports because it makes you unhappy? B/c that’s the key issue. Women don’t tell their husband they want them to find sex outside marriage to make them happy, they just want them to stop having sex…

Not a household duty. She's having sex with her husband, not the house. A relationship duty IF she wants him to be happy,in the same way that he might do things that he doesn't feel like to keep her happy. They can also choose not to & accept relationship breakdown is likely. 1/3
SaraGD@EnMantis

@HPluckrose Nothing bad needs to happen to anyone to see that sex as a household duty is sexual abuse. There is legislation against marital rape for a reason. I'm 47, I didn't use internet for 30 years, I have an outside life 🙄

@exQUIZitely I LOVE Sierra games but the nod still has to go to LucasArts for the 90s. Space Quest IV and Quest For Glory II were peak Sierra but they are 1990-91. The rest of the decade really belongs to LucasArts.

Looking at the 90s, I would argue that: 🔥 id Software was the benchmark for FPS 🔥 MicroProse was the benchmark for simulations 🔥 Westwood was the benchmark for RTS ...but now it gets tricky, because I can't decide who the benchmark was for adventure games. I am torn between Sierra and LucasArts. Your vote please. Remember: 1990 to 1999
