Canadians keep telling me how the education system is so terrible in America compared to Canada. Why do successful leaders and entrepreneurs in Canada nearly all tended US universities.. But none of the most successful people from the US travel to Canada for education?

As a former waterbomber pilot who used to lead an aerial firefighting fleet, I can tell you “send help” is an extremely dishonest framing by the Canadian government. The Canadian government routinely blocks U.S. firefighting companies from attacking fires in Canada, while aggressively sending their government-subsidized aircraft to the U.S. to earn commercial rates from the U.S. taxpayer. It’s big business for them and they run it like a Chinese protectionist racket.

I've spent my career creating massive wealth for people far wealthier than me. For 7+ years now I've been unable to shake an idea that would create massive wealth for people less wealthy than me. Might have to give it a go.

In my startup, I used to think I was in control as CEO. And in some ways, I was. When you start at zero, there's nothing yet pushing back. No legacy customers to support, no competitors watching everything you do, no internal norms and ways of operating that get in the way. You set a course, and build momentum in a specific direction, largely without constraints. But my perspective shifted when I took over an established business. At scale, with real market conditions, competitors, and internal business norms all pushing back, the job of CEO started to feel less like piloting a rocket and more like being captain of a sailboat. You set a course, but ultimately how you get there isn't fully up to you. Frankly, your end destination isn't even 100% determinable. Those forces are constantly pushing your ship in different directions, and a good captain doesn't fight them head-on, they read them and adjust, instead of fighting against the elements. The faster those forces change, the more your job becomes about establishing the right systems to help you read the water and adjust, not just set a course and hold it. Maybe I'd see it differently in another context, but it definitely shifted my perspective a ton for now.
