@_Eric_Reinhart I'm interested to know what you mean by "strategic use of PR" here--what kind of approach are you suggesting? What kind of public messaging do you think we should be trying to use to push hospitals to make this kind of policy/practice change?

@_Eric_Reinhart I appreciate that you're encouraging people to get involved! but I also want those students who are passionate about changing things to make it into the profession where they have a few more cards to play.

@_Eric_Reinhart Also worth it to note the demands on med students' time are different from undergrads. A really intense organizing push takes multiple ppl who can pull together many hrs over a short span! I have a feeling my clinical instructors wouldn't have okayed me taking time off for that.

@JoRod8800 @Amber_LeeOMS This is a really common reaction to stories like the OP's but truly, honestly, it's about the frustrating assumption people make that "obviously" this young woman would not be becoming a doctor

@GamerEMDoc Definitely moved some community and 1 rural program move up the list after interview I also had one signal fall to 2nd-to-last after interviews because the culture (while non-toxic!) was such a poor fit for me and what I wanted/needed

@GamerEMDoc Obviously n=1 but if those other programs hadn't interviewed me despite not being signaled I wouldn't have had a chance at the program I ranked #1 (and matched!)

If we are being honest with ourselves, for those of us out in the community struggling to fill spots now, the larger the number of signals (now 7) kind of negates the whole review process, holistic or not. How many students matched below their 3rd choice, let alone their 7th?

Late breaking #CORDAA23 info - 2024 ERAS changes: 1) Geographic preferences optional 2) Experiences limit to 10 3) Life challenges section optional 4) Signaling to 7, regardless of home/away What do you think about these changes? How will it help holistic review? @CORD_EM

@DGlaucomflecken @WestTxWinds At a minimum they should have to declare the conflict of interest and I would love to see an org decide that being contractually bound to silence about PE is an unacceptable COI for a board member

@WestTxWinds Yes, it’s a bad decision, but assuming docs are going to sell, we need to keep them out of organizations that have an enormous impact regarding advocacy. It’s a massive conflict of interest.

PE thread: One of the challenges with fighting private equity in medicine is the lack of data. We need to look at costs, outcomes, burnout, etc pre/post PE acquisition. We all know pushing medicine further into for profit territory is bad, but we need data to show how bad it is

@ashtonsamos I think it's mostly that tan can come off slightly more casual For example, with my navy suit I felt like I could play around with the blouse I wore underneath a little bit more, but with a tan suit you might want the rest of your outfit to lean a little more formal

Can someone tell me why you’re not supposed to wear a tan suit for residency interviews but black, grey, navy are fine? Lol.

@agraif @OlgaTheOBGYN It's not relevant, actually. Young people especially can often clear the virus on their own and have subsequent normal paps, so a history of abnormal paps has nothing to do with life expectancy. An actual history of cervical dysplasia or cancer is a different thing.

I applied for life insurance & one of the questions the broker asked was “have you ever had an abnormal pap?”, which is just another way in which women get discriminated against because no one is walking around asking men if they’ve been giving HPV to everyone recklessly…😡

@KoenigAdam @trpender I'm just grateful I took a year off med school where I worked exactly one job! The year before med school I think I worked 3+ part time jobs at some point during the year? Would have been a nightmare to try to dig up

@AdamRodmanMD @RianKMD You're right that it wasn't Halsted, it was his colleague Osler in 1889! Internships existed prior to that and were all you needed (technically still all you need) to practice as a GP. Formal specialty training post-internship (now called residency) started quite a bit later

@RianKMD These were usually new graduates who effectively apprenticed under an experienced doctor and lived in the hospital (hence the name). In the first half of 19th century, this was often ad hoc, but by the second half it was built into many training programs.

Why do US medical residents work up to 80 hr/week (sometimes more), are often paid minimum wage counting all the work, have extremely high rates of suicide, and work 6 days per week w/ 24+ hr shifts? The answer lies with cocaine & Dr. William Halsted.

If I were a residency program director, I would ask applicants one question and one question only during their interview: what is your pen of choice? Tells me all I need to know about you
