Bluebaum and Nakamura both reach the halfway point of the #FIDECandidates without a win, but the frustration will be greatest for pre-tournament ratings favorite Hikaru!

This is what @MagnusCarlsen had to say about @GMHikaru and his race towards qualifying for the FIDE Candidates Tournament 2026 in the press conference for the Freestyle Chess Grand Slam Tour Finals at Capetown, South Africa. Here's the full quote: "The fact that Nakamura is going around playing these, as he calls it himself, referring to something I said many years ago, Mickey Mouse tournaments in order to qualify for the candidates, in order to play the 40 games that are required by FIDE. I think that's absolutely- it's wild. It's insane, why would you require somebody who's very clearly good enough to play in the candidates, why would you require him to play these tournaments which he doesn't really have time for? Well, you want to have the best players in the candidates and he's clearly one of them." #chess #chessbaseindia #magnuscarlsen #hikarunakamura #freestylechess #candidates

🇺🇸 Hikaru Nakamura criticizes anti-cheating measures at the Candidates. Speaking live on Kick with Jon Ludvig Hammer and Fiona Steil-Antoni, Nakamura called the security protocols “nonsense,” arguing they’ve gone too far. Players are scanned before and after games, with strict controls and multiple checks in place. “At some point you have to ask… who are we? Mossad agents in Iran or what? We’re just chess players.” He added that he hasn’t raised it with FIDE, saying he doesn’t see the point, and believes concerns about cheating at such a tightly controlled event are being exaggerated.

"12...0-0 was not in my file!" says Nakamura, "and it was too difficult to find [13.Ne4!] over the board." Hikaru is unimpressed by the work done by his seconds, who he doesn't name but describes as "strong GMs" #FIDECandidates
