Tough business, but worth it — humanity needs #biotech! Still, it illustrates that if a bio company (or fund) posts top returns, then really it's like winning a marathon at high altitude... competing against others at sea level. Only do it if you love it!
Bruce Booth@LifeSciVC

Humbling 30 year Biotech stats shared by @verdadcap in a recent report: Just over 1,000 biotechs hit $200M mkt cap at some point. Of those, 67% have lost value (had cumulative negative returns), vs 48% for all other US companies. Of these 600+ biotechs, roughly 50% were acquired at negative total returns, 10% delisted, the remaining 40% are still public and underwater for their average investor The median biotech company in this period has delivered an annualized return of -15% (vs 1% for other US Companies). It's a tough business.

I question the utility of the flood of daily posts on @X declaring new AI models in #biology that have solved this and that drug design problem. Have they really? These posts are often accompanied by slick videos. I get it if the hype is designed to raise more money for startups - we need funding for the sector to advance... But wouldn't it be wiser to just design the drugs with the characteristics that are being claimed --> do the right studies that get them into humans --> and *then* let the human data speak for themselves? Humility > hype. I am a believer in the incredible advancements by @demishassabis @UWproteindesign and others that rightfully earned them the #NobelPrize, and I got heat for saying that they are the most important people in drug dev today. But on the flip side, hype is hype. The main problem in #biology today is not the models, but the missing data needed to train these AI models to create meaningful breakthroughs... This is why companies like @tahoe_ai generating this data are so important.

It is with a heavy heart and profound emotion that I announce the passing of my beloved spouse, Reika Yokochi, who left us at the age of 48 after a courageous battle with EGFR-positive lung cancer @EGFRResisters, a disease that disproportionately affects non-smoking Asian women. Reika was an extraordinary companion, a devoted mother, and a renowned scientist. Besides her remarkable scientific career, Reika was a talented musician, a passion she lovingly passed on to our children. Saori, now 14, and Kensei, 9, have become dedicated violinists. Her spirit continues to illuminate my life and that of our children, who remain the guardians of her love and wisdom. In the field of Earth and planetary sciences, Reika made her mark with her ability to solve complex problems with creativity and rigor. She advanced our understanding of the origin of Earth's volatiles by identifying the presence of rare gases of solar origin in the deep mantle. Her experimental research into the trapping of gases in cometary ice has opened new avenues for understanding the formation and evolution of our solar system. Additionally, by studying the pathways of groundwater, she discovered that certain water reserves beneath the Negev desert were over 361,000 years old, thereby revealing unprecedented aspects of the Earth's hydrological cycle. Her departure leaves a huge void in the scientific community. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reika_Yok…

@halletecco Apparently I said something along similar lines when I was very little during my first plane trip and my dad always used the story to explain the theory of relativity to his students. Thanks for bringing back that memory for me. (And safe travels).
