@HandwergTom @giordano_lives @MrDanielBuck But why is the F worth 59 points on your scale and an A 11? A B 10. This creates huge statistical anomalies and is simply tradition over sense. A grade should define learning rather than be an mathematical calculation. You cannot explain how a 100 point scale helps learning.

@ZahavaStadler @jessgartner I don't know how many times I've tried to explain this. It's not about huge administrative bloat at the top. And Superintendent salaries in particular are not holding back teacher salaries (private sector wage differential between CEO & "workers" is.. uhhh.. somewhat larger!)

@JDSmith343 @giordano_lives @MrDanielBuck So exactly the same as grades, except that the failing grade is three times smaller than it used to be. Again, we don't typically give percents but rather grade levels, so there is no difference between a 32 and a 35, both of which are the same grade.

@giordano_lives @HandwergTom @MrDanielBuck Well, a 1 would be a D. And yes, you can define 5 levels clearly so that Ss and Ts know what each means. You cannot clearly define 100 levels of learning. What's the difference between a 32 and 35? Why is the 100 point scale effective? Why does it work?

@ModestTeacher I'd cross off the word 'allowed'. It's not appropriate for them to 'allow' you to do anything - rather it is your own choice as to what is best.

@JDSmith343 @giordano_lives @MrDanielBuck There's nothing logical or illogical about it. Same as the 4 point. There is no reason they have to be the same size other than it feels good. Notice we don't have 100 levels, but rather 5 since you only get the letter as your final typically.

@HandwergTom @giordano_lives @MrDanielBuck Why is the 100 point scale accurate? What is logical about 11 levels of A, 10 levels of B, C, and D, and 59 undefineable levels of F? The only reason for it is a traditional one. It's not effective or logical. 5 levels of learning can be defined. 100 cannot.

@JDSmith343 @giordano_lives @MrDanielBuck A 4 point scale is the exactly as asinine as this. The only purpose of moving to such a scale is to make the failing value lower. There are literally no reasons whatsoever why having the failing grade be a larger range than the passing ones is a problem.

@giordano_lives @MrDanielBuck Because it's an asinine way to deal with a stupid system that has 59 levels of failure. Move everything to a 4 point scale. A 0 is still possible but it's work the same as an A or a B.

@educator4ever88 @MrDanielBuck Teachers absolutely should not follow bad rules. You have a responsibility to act ethically even if you will be punished for not acting unethically.

@MrDanielBuck I do not recommend this course of action for nontenured teachers. Better- go work for a district that aligns with your grading philosophy but untenured teachers need to follow even the bad rules. Document, advocate, etc but don’t rush your livelihood over it.

@ShannonKuhlman @ModestTeacher I'm wondering what got kids to that point. What could have been done in the younger grades to keep kids from getting that discouraged by the time they get to high school. From my experiences, we keep pushing kids along without closing any gaps, so then they shut down.

@GaleMorrisonEd Perhaps because his mom talked shit about it all year. Now there is no real expectation for him to learn and participate. Why would he rise to the occasion with leadership such as that?

Welp. The year in "student-led, inquiry-based learning with no grades" for my 8th grader has been the abject failure I said it would be.

@MrLandesman The thing I want to go back and see is the week of intake with new students who are 11-12. Remember that a lot of US charters started as middle schools and quickly opened elementary schools b/c they struggled with new, older students. Michaela cracked the code.

@tombennett71 There's nothing remarkable about what is there. Like any 'exceptional' school or choice school, this is all the result of some sort of funnel effect. You can do whatever you want when all the students come in fully cooperative.

@SecCardona @usedgov Well that antisemitism is overtly and obviously pushed on a major news network daily. So maybe do not put that on educators, and instead do your jobs regulating it.

The venom and violence of antisemitism will not be the story of our time. Today, I'm releasing the most ambitious and comprehensive U.S. government-led effort to combat antisemitism in history. Allow me to lay it out:

You’re both wrong. Teachers and parents are a team, working together for the best outcomes for EVERY student. This false dichotomy between teachers and parents is only fueling the problems schools are facing now.

This demonstrates succinctly why we need to be strenuously resist teachers seeing themselves as crusaders devoted to moulding children to their own religious or political beliefs. On *any* point of the spectrum. Parents don't pay for their children to be indoctrinated by their maths teacher, no matter how strong their convictions. Focus on the role, the subject, safety, calm and dignity.
