@Okie_Rancher I want to be shocked by this, just angry. The pencil pushers know better than us folks with boots on the ground. Big ag just gets bigger.

I am grateful for what we have and that we can still operate. I’m grateful that good, local people we know buy what we raise, and that I’m able to work the land with my wife, my son, and my Dad. I don’t want subsidies. I’d rather there be no aid, period, because at present my tax dollars give subsidies to my corporate, big Ag competition who already hold monopolies across the board. I do want the government to stop increasing beef and commodity imports to lower prices below production costs. We should be the world’s largest exporter of beef and commodities, not Brazil (whose companies we subsidize). It’s almost comical that the one “subsidy” I applied for a few years ago was a $10,000 greenhouse grant. With Oklahoma winds I spent extra on materials using larger galvanized framing and put it up myself. I put metal 3/4 on the north side to keep north winds at bay and 3ft all along bottom and ends. I spent a bit over 10k and when I submitted all the material receipts a new little hire from the local office came out to inspect. “Wow, that’s a lot sturdier than most I see.” I proudly smiled and nodded, but then he said I had to remove all metal and extra bracing as it was “non compliant.” I said no, keep your money, and not only did they not reimburse but they sent a letter saying my “noncompliance” made me ineligible for other grants. Wasn’t applying for any anyway. Wouldn’t have built it if the grant wasn’t expected … These are the games they play. What little money is there for small operators isn’t there to help, it’s there to control.

Even just a few dozen will fill a barn full of flammable dust and dander. It's almost impossible to clean these chicken factories for all the augers and chutes. Dumbest ag ever

Every politician I’ve ever seen get behind a podium says they support farmers. Meanwhile we’ve lost closer to 200,000 family farms in the last decade. You do the math. The agri-business lobby spent $1.5 billion in DC over that same stretch. And the family farm kept disappearing. That’s not negligence. That’s a plan. They built themselves into the image of the American farmer: the boots, the fields, the heritage. And while they’re selling you that picture, they’re consolidating everything behind it. Fewer farms, bigger operations, less competition, more control. Every farm that folds is one less voice, one less option, one less Friday night football game in a town that used to have one. I’ve heard the same thing Shawn’s heard — that going after big ag is harder than going after big food. I believe it. Close to a quarter of Iowa farmland is now owned by people who will never set foot in those communities. Same playbook as Blackstone buying up neighborhoods — just quieter. The solution? Small. This is a pig who spent years confined in a gestation crate. She was left behind when factory farms flooded in Iowa and then rescued by some volunteers. The volunteers took her home and dug her a mud pit. She ignored it. They assumed years of confinement had extinguished her natural instincts. Then they noticed her wandering into the woods on their property. They followed her — and found her rooting in a pile of dirt, digging her own mud pit. The pork industry claims pigs adapt to confinement. They don't. Inside every gestation crate is an animal who still yearns to root, wallow, and just be a pig. This is the tragedy of factory farming. We tried to reduce feeling animals to machines. We failed.

Sometimes God works through community. If 25,000 people bought a $10 ticket, Happy Life Ranch could be secure for the next 25 years and keep mentoring future ranchers who feel called to this fight. Small farms survive when communities decide they matter. 🌾🙏

I don't think folks understand how bad the agricultural situation is in America, and the Farm Bill isn't for the farmers & ranchers it purports to serve.
