@flipper_net I read the OS part, it seems like you're re-inventing NixOS/Nix kinda system, especially for a tool like this, I think flakes would be the best way to manage workspaces for every use case right?

I admit that NixOS is likely the most secure and resistant (to supply chains) Linux right now. Through the sheer, uhm, let's call it dedication, and also because it's used in the military-industrial complex. But I'm not dealing with a fake Haskell for bash templating!

@MrFlashAccount @DocEyss @valigo nah, man, "i installed some dependencies and everything is now broken" may happen in archland, but not on nixos. if you screw up your system - you can rollback and try again to fix your stuff

nixos has a reputation for being impossible to configure unless you live in config files. someone made a gui for it.

@Tee8z just ask someone who already is on nixos, saves lots of time. also you can ask me if you have any troubles with nix

Went through this pain so hopefully life is a bit easier for others trying to use nixOS. Honestly, would’ve been nice to have this as a guide/reference. The general approach I expect is people making a private repo then referencing this one as needed. github.com/tee8z/devshop

@andre_arag @__hand7s @kmcnam1 I can do the same thing with debian but that doesn't mean that it is rolling release. Nixos has stable and unstable version for a reason dude.

CachyOS skipped the Open Gaming Collective, and gamers rewarded it by making it the top Linux distro on Steam bit.ly/4uUC1UZ

@Sword09D @TanknDessertLvr @bee_fumo Kinda. More like we have good modular package management which leads to lack of dll hell and which can be easily managed with declarative config. You skip last part and just use nix profile, but I'm not recomending it

daily experience with Linux >turn on my PC >wayland.conf broken >fuuuuuck >miss the job interview >plug in headphones. >entire pipewire audio stack blows up. >spend my day in a terminal until it all works again >reboot >fuck I accidentally my bootloader >reinstall >try to play a game >as always proton requires 4 hours of pre configuration per game >play for 5 minutes >spend the rest of my day in a patched browser whose JavaScript is removed >end my day praying to Stallman.

@ayesha_fatiima Because macOS gives them the Unix/Linux-like terminal experience… Without needing to spend 3 hours debugging WiFi drivers 😭

@Sword09D @TanknDessertLvr @bee_fumo Nix is best of both worlds. More stable than Debian and more fresh than Arch. Top dog of linux autism. Yet learning curve is brutal, but it rewards you well

@TanknDessertLvr @bee_fumo To be fair, I would not have chosen a rolling release distro if a few packages breaking every now and then was an issue to me, adding locks is easy too so it's fine really. No clue about Nix

i’m switching my NixOS daily driver to CachyOS solely because i can do a lot more with it (without getting a hemorrhage in my brain, i dunno why Nix Flakes seem so complicated to me)
