Don’t miss the significance of this: the administration is announcing the end of the war in effect without having achieved regime change, ending Iran’s nuclear program or eliminating its missile program. And its focus is now on solving a problem which didn’t exist prior to the war: a closed or nearly-closed Strait of Hormuz. The president could of course order new military strikes but the current state of play has not met his sometimes outsized expectations.

I personally do not think this ceasefire will work and we’ll end up with fighting through May 9, though if it works it’ll be very interesting. It’ll be Zelenskyy’s team forcing a concession from the Russians for the first time. I believe previous ceasefires (aside from when Trump was trying to get a deal last year) have all been dictated by the Russians. This would be the Ukrainians dictating a ceasefire.

The ceasefire unilaterally declared by Ukraine has officially begun. The last reported Russian drone launches were at approximately 21:00 Kyiv time and have already entered Ukrainian airspace. Russian channels reported drone launches from Ukraine at approximately 22:00 Kyiv time.

Throughout May 5, Russia carried out numerous attacks across Ukraine. As a result of strikes targeting nine regions, at least 27 people have been killed and over 120 injured – all in a single day. Following its usual tactics of terror, many civilian sites have been hit.
A day that should have marked the entry into force of a ceasefire proposed by Ukraine is instead ending with a rising toll of victims from intensified Russian attacks.
There are no signs that Russia is planning to stop its senseless and brutal war, and no clear response indicating a return to diplomacy for the sake of lasting peace – only more killings.
While Russia shows no interest in saving human lives, a collective and firm position is needed from all those who support the protection of life and value peace. Terror must be stopped.
