Remember Mikaela Conley. She was only 19. A high school classmate, African American Jalique Keene, asked her for a ride in her car. She agreed. During the drive, he attacked her, brutally beat her, and raped her. Then he strangled her to death. He dragged her body into the school courtyard and dumped it in a nearby wooded area. Two days later, her body was found in horrifying condition. Surveillance footage caught him dragging her lifeless body. The prosecutor said: “the way Keene killed Conley demonstrated a total lack of respect for life. He is a self-absorbed, self-aggrandizing psychopath.” He described how Mikaela desperately fought to break free while he slowly killed her, backed by video and DNA evidence. “We don’t know exactly how long she struggled, but the evidence shows it was prolonged.” Keene was sentenced to 58 years for the rape and murder of Mikaela.

Three men have been jailed for almost 30 years after a teenager was seriously injured when shot following disorder in Birmingham. The 15-year-old boy was fired at while riding a bike through George Street Park, Balsall Heath, at just before 10pm on 2 August last year. It followed disorder just over half-an-hour earlier - where weapons were brandished – outside shops near the junction of Mary Street and George Street. The teenager had not been involved in the fight but had been seen talking to a man who had been involved. Lamar Anderson, Jeheim Wilson and Kaine Dowe went in search of that man, but when they couldn’t find him they spotted the boy on his bike instead. He was ambushed and shot in the back, sustaining serious and life-changing injuries. An investigation by the Major Crime Unit led us to identify the trio as being involved in the shooting. They were sentenced at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday (1 May). Anderson, aged 22, of Heeley Road, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to endanger life and causing grievous bodily harm. He was jailed for 16 years, with a further three years on licence. Wilson, aged 25, of Lapworth Grove, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and was put behind bars for six-and-a-half years. Dowe, aged 23, of Lapworth Grove, Birmingham, also admitted possession of a firearm with intent to cause fear of violence and was locked up for six years.
